This can't be good. This is going to be my apocalypse. I can't even remember what I put in it. But it's just sitting their, deviously simmering away. I bet the only reason it smells good is so that it can lure me close only to explode in my face and burn the house down (gods knows how water and an electric cooker can start a fire, but I know it can - I see the smugness in its... its... bits of bacon?)
Okay... got carried away there. But I am making soup for the first time ever , and I am scared (not for the first time ever).

I think I speak for at least a small minority of people here when I say 'Good Luck'.

I presume this is home made soup and not just a tin of Heinz? :p

I know you said you don't remember what you put in it...but what did you put in it? That will affect the cooking time.

I speak for a small majority of the population when I say, "We're a paradoxical statement, but at least we're not redundant!"
Damn, I thought something smelt funny around here.

I know you said you don't remember what you put in it...but what did you put in it? That will affect the cooking time.Uh... I just checked. I put in a red onion (medium), a courgette, a sweet pepper, some garlic, some ginger, some salt, and 2 rashers of bacon. It's been on for about an hour now.

its done when the component parts are done.
if you put in raw carrots, its done when the carrots are done. if you put in dried beans....well goodluck, itll be done in several hours when the beans are done.
you WERE joking about the can part werent you? if not, its done now.
Carrots always take so bloody long...
Bacon doesn't need to cook long, so as soon as all the veggies are at a desired consistancy, it's time to ladle up and gorge down!

It'll taste better the longer it simmers, as the flavours mix.

But then sometimes the veggies just turn into mush.
I like to cook the meat (chicken, beef, pork) for a LONG time before adding veggies...if it's a seafood soup, the veggies go in first, and the seafood at the last second. Mmmm. I want soup!

I think I put it on for too long. Or too hot. The onion and courette got way too sloppy. Tastes nice though. I might get some potatoes and carrots next time I make one. Or even lentils. Yummy. :D
edit: the mushrooms are amazing though.
