New York City!

So I'm heading to the Big Apple this June for my brother's wedding, and we're going to have a few extra days to wander NYC. I haven't been there since I was 2 (and I obviously don't remember my last visit :p ).

So I figured...whether you live in or near the city, or have just visited lately, it would be awesome to get some advice from NSers with more experience in NYC than myself.

Here's a short list of some places I hope to see while I'm there. Maybe someone else can remind me of something I've forgotten, or tell me about some cool but obscure thing that I wouldn't know to look for.

Empire State Building
Statue of Liberty
Ground Zero
A Broadway show
Central Park
A museum(s)...not sure which one (recommendations??)

Any other advice, such as good restaurants or things like that, would be appreciated. :)

If I had the oppertunity to go there I would love to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

So much to see, my personal interest would be the arms and armour, but still, i think it would be worth visiting no matter what your interests.

Just look of this stuff ---> LINKY (http://www.metmuseum.org/Works_of_Art/viewHigh.asp?dep=4&viewmode=0&set=01)

Looks really interesting! But now I'm torn between the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History...

...odds are I'll have to pick one of the two, since we'll have so much other stuff to see in the course of only a couple of days. :(

Oh, does your Natural History Museum have a big dinosaur in its main entrance like the one in London does? If it does, that's always worth seeing.

That's all I can contribute I'm afraid, seeing as the closest I've ever been to New York is West Devon...

I just checked out their website, and they do indeed have dinosaur skeletons...

...but I don't know, that weapons collection at the art museum looks fascinating.

Well I think you would probably enjoy the museum of natural history or the Guggenheim.

Personally I’ve never been to the Guggenheim but I hear a lot of good things about it, the natural history museum on the other hand I’ve been to and I have to say Its pretty decent, if your in to culture history, and animals and such..

You can do the met and the natural history museum both - if you are quick at each of them and only look at the 'famous' stuff. They are just across the park from each other and are free* (except for special exhibitions).

You can't go up in the crown of the statue anymore.

A really cool way to see a lot of the city - if you have to rush - is take a circle line boat tour around manhattan. You'll get a lot in about 2.5 hrs.

*it's pay what you wish, so you can get in for a penny.

I just drove up to NYC Saturday morning and drove back late Sunday night.

So, anyways, in regards to your questions.

For food, Spigolo (Italian), Bar Americain (Sandwich Place), and Perry St. (Steak). For shopping, Bird (Boutique) and Steven Alan (Casual) and for Bars Flatiron Lounge, or Fontana’s. Finally, for museums and what not, 303 Gallery, Brooklyn Museum of Art, and David Zwirner Gallery.

The WTC.
Beside that being somewhat trollish/flamebaitish, all you'd see is about a billion American flags and probably a construction site.

What I heard from someone who recently spent a week in New York was how amazing the food was. They have great restaurants in that city. You really need to visit the street venders for food too. Not a lot of fast food chains there but great street vender chow.

The American Museum of Natural History and the MET are both amazing and my favorite museums i've ever been to. It's hard for me to pick one over the other.

The observation deck on the top of the Empire State Building was awesome, the view was beautiful. I went at night because i wanted to see the lights, but i'm sure that going during the day would be nice too.

Another fun thing is the Circle Line, the boat tour around New York Harbour. I went on a three hour one, but they have shorter ones. You go right by the Statue of Liberty, and under almost every bridge. It's a great way to see Manhattan.

My favorite thing to do when i'm in NYC is just walk around the city. I love seeing the sites, the architecture, the people, etc. My favorite parts are The Village, Soho, Chelsea, that whole area, and Times Square.

I had to pay a specific amount of money at both museums, and i wasn't there for any special exhibits, it was general admission. I had to pay a regular adult fare. 20 something bucks at each.

You can't go higher than the pedestal anymore, period.

I've been to New York before. Personally, I'd recommend visiting that Indian settlement in the north of Manahatta Island... they make really good fish and trap beaver... then there's always the governor's fortress, if you speak Dutch...

What? You mean that's gone now? Wow, things change so fast.... ;)
