If you were a game reviewer, what game(s) would get top marks from you?

So, yeah, this is essentially a "What's your favourite game?" topic.
I'd have to say, on a scale of 0 to 6, with 6 being spectacular and 0 being Big Rigs, I'd give 6/6 to:
Doom
Final Fantasy VII
Katamari Damacy
We Love Katamari
Civilization IV
The Anglophone Peoples
27-03-2006, 08:47
the Civilization series, even the Avalon Hill Board Game, gets it for me.
Egg and chips
27-03-2006, 08:53
Darwinia
Uplink
Half-life 2
Counter-strike:Source.
(Wouldn't get full marks, but would be very high scoring)

- Star Ocean: The Second Story (PS1)
Honorable mentions go to Metroid Prime (GC), Star Wars: KOTOR (PC), and Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy (PS2)
The Emperor Fenix

Chrono Trigger -> IMO, this is hands-down the greatest game ever made. There is simply no contest.
Final Fantasy VI -> A close second to Chrono Trigger. The king of the Final Fantasy series.
StarCraft: Brood Wars -> My favourite RTS, I still play this online on a daily basis.
CounterStrike 1.6 -> Not a fan of Source, I find 1.6 to be a more solid game. CS in general wins for best FPS though.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time-> A Link To The Past fans will want to crucify me, but I consider this to be the pinnacle of Zelda games.
Super Mario World -> Will remain the best of the Mario series in my eyes. Mostly because this was the first video game I ever played and was brought up on it. I still remember 100% of the secrets in this game, sadly enough.

We like the same games. I never really got into Warcraft, though, so I can't grade that one.
I don't know about Might and Magic, and I would tack on Medieval: Total War which would have gotten übermarks.

I'm currently playing Battle for Middle Earth II a lot, but I wouldn't rank it up with the best.

System Shock 2 (Best Game Ever. Think otherwise? You're wrong.)
Frontier: Elite 2 (or First Encounters)
Red Alert 2
Total Annihilation
Fallout 1/2
Master of Orion II
The Thief series gets an honourable mention. I'm waiting to see if Civ 4 and Oblivion meet the standards required, but I've not played them enough yet.
System Shock 2 (Best Game Ever. Think otherwise? You're wrong.)
Shit! *adds to list*
How can you prefer the cold taste of steel over the splendour of flesh?
:D
The 1st 3 Ratchet and Clanks are good (the recent gladiator game is crappy though - it's like a couple of hours long....)
I liked the Harry Potter 1 & 2 games for PS2 (but the following releases are so sucky it's not funny)
Baldurs Gate (both 1 & 2) utterly rock - where the frig is a third installment?!
I'm quite partial to Bard's Tale at the moment...although my PS2 is f****d (isnt everyone's?) and I dont have an X-Box yet (after PS2 I wont be buying another one of those crappy over-priced Sony book-ends-come paper weights), so I'm not playing console games at all at the moment.
I've been consoling myself with KOL and Runescape...
The thing about games is they're only fun the first so many times through, then it's like...been there done that, when's a new one coming out? Unfortunately for some reason many games series that are awesome the first couple of installments crap-out at number 3...all of a sudden they are heaps shorter, the good stuff gets turfed and minor annoyances suddenly become major game features.
What the heck are the game producers thinking and who the frig do they 'market test' them on? I can only conclude that whoever tells the game producers 'wow it's as good as the earlier ones' must be a bunch of sycophantic liers.

Way too many to list them all here...
But they'd include all the classic Lucasfilm/LucasArts titles, the Sierra classics and much more.
My all-time favorites are Loom and Xenon 2: Megablast.

oooh yeah, that one rocked ass!
also Deus Ex, Goldeneye, and GTA 2 (my favourite... before they went all 3D)
oh and how can we foget Sam & Max: Day Of The Tentacle?! :D
I had way too much fun being evil in that game...at one point, there was a weird red mist that followed me everywhere. And all because I like kicking chickens.
hehe yeah... i did the game properly being myself (and turned out about as good as you could get with butterflies following me everywhere and my head sporting a shiny halo...) but then made a character called Evil Spog to do the game as wickedly as i could :D
he, too, had the red mist, and horns, and glowing red eyes... i loved it when you entered a village and everybody runs away from you! :p
(also loved the top level lightning spell... so easy to kill stuff!)
favorite Games...
Civ (all of em.)
Lord of the Realms
Phantasmagoria (in my opinion, the first true Horror Computer Game)
Final Fantasy (all of em)
Phantasy Star (all of em)
Fatal Frame (only played the first one.)
Doom (best stress reliever I've ever seen)
oh and Zagat, my PS2 is still running. and I'm talking 1st gen.
one thing I did learn from a friend who repairs them is that the main cause of any problem tends to be how people shut them down. what you're suppose to do is hold the reset until it turns red, then turn it off. to just turn it off wears the laser out faster. (would be nice if they mentioned that in the manual. )
and while I do tend to agree with the third installment rule of yours, there are ways to find out. first is, as the series of games progress, is there a change in gameplay/storyline, if not... then future installments will become run-of-the-mill stuff.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
Europa Universalis 2
Warlords Battlecry 2
Final Fantasy 7
That's about all I can think of, but it's been a while since I played anything except WB2 or EU2, and even longer since I bought a game (new or old)
Strathdonia
27-03-2006, 12:19
Warzone 2100 (old but very good RTS, first fully 3d one IIRC)
Total Annihilation
Agent Orange (C64 intergalactic farming sim)
Civ series (inc alpha century)
Operation Flashpoint (yes it has limitations (namely building interior CQB and the way soem vehicles are coded) but by god it still rocks).
Call fo Duty series (PC)
HalfLife series (inc all the expansions and official mods)
Deus Ex series (1st one was way better btu the second oen is still enjoyable)
NavyFeild (10 out of 10 for game idea and basic play, shame about the graphics, bugs and balance issues).
Not ONE person has mentioned Halo/Halo 2? SACRILEGE! FIENDS! Halo is all! Abase yourselves in worship before the holy light of the Master Chief and ye shall be spared! Redempt, for Halo 3 is nigh!
Ahem. As you can see, Halo and Halo 2 are obvious choices.
Also, in no particular order-
C&C Generals
Call of Duty 2
Star Wars: Empire at War
Rome Total War
and good ol' Runescape :)

Medal Of Honor Underground for the PSOne:
Yes, the graphics may not be brilliant, but I still say this game is one of the best, if not best games I have ever played. The game throughout dripped with atmosphere and authenticity and substance.
The story and sound were sublime, with a beautiful ochestral score to notch up the tension and atmosphere to suit each level and mission.
All the levels were fantastic, but among the highlights were the North Africa mission and the Paris Uprising level, where you take part in the Paris Uprising of August 1944 against The German occupiers. The mission 'Street-By-Street' saw you fighting street by street alongside the French Resistance in tense urban warfare with the German Garrison, to a backdrop of old music that sounds as if it is playing from a nearby street and the background sounds of gun battles and french and german voices shouting at each other as they fought.
In the next mission, the Germans deployed their Panzers to crush the uprising, and the audio backdrop is of the sounds of gunshots echoing as the ominious rumble and squeaks of tanks on Paris streets can be heard.
MOH:Frontline PS2
Probably the last classic Medal of Honor game (as of writing) for pre-next gen consoles, this game mixed atmosphere and tension with increased authentic squad combat. A nice balanced mix that made for an excellent game. MOH: Rising Sun followed, and the less said about that, the better.

Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
StarCraft
Red Alert 2
Age of Empires 2
Civilization IV
Galactic Civilizations
No game that I have played deserves a perfect rating. But that is not to say that my favorites don't come really DAMN close.
Metal Gear Solid (1-3)
Final Fantasy III (VI in Japan)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Sonic CD
Super Mario 64
Half-Life 2

Yes it would be nice to mention as much in the manual. However the PS2 has definately been problematic, there has even been a class-action suit (which Sony offered to settle out of court) relating to not only the units themselves breaking down, but actually damaging peoples' disks. Not all PS2s are created equal - it was only models with certain serial numbers effected....so whether or not you got a dud probably depends when and where you purchassed.
What I am certain of is that I have played my PS2 much less than my Playstation, have treated it with much more respect, and have not spilt even one thing on/in it yet it's the PS2 that doesnt go. When I first purchassed it, I went through 3 models (ie got it home and out of the box and had to return it for another - twice) just to get one working one....so far as I am concerned Sony have frigged themselves. I got the PS2 because of the longevity and quality of Playstation (not only does it just keep going with no sign of quitting despite rough treatment over the years, but the console was around for years and years and years).
But I digress.....(nothing new there then...)

Actually a lot of the games that are sucky on third installment are sucky because of they have changed the basic elements. Take the total abortion that passes for the third installment in the HP series (Prisoner of Azkaban) - utter crap! In the case of Ratchet it's the 4th game, from an awesome series to an ultra short, ultra boring mess....crappy as!
I avoid buying crappy games by hiring them first. Saved myself 1000's that
way.
{edit}
Oh my gosh how could I forget (in my earlier post) - Dark Cloud - Dark Chronicle (the second one, not the first)
And of course that old classic for Playstation - Tekken 3 : King of Iron Fist

Never played Total War, though the games have been recommended. Heroes is a nifty turn based fantasy strategy game. The fifth version is coming out soon, let's see what that one's like.
You should get the M2:TW when it comes out and if your computer can handle it. I'm not all the big of a fan with fantasy, unless its RPG. From what I understand, Might and Magic is an RTS with RPG elements, but I also hate micromanagement. I like to look at RTS as sort of a macrogame. I'll get my micromanagement fix from castle simulators, RPG and the like. Then again, I could have no idea. :p
Oh, and don't bother ever with Rome: Total War. Mind you, the franchise is owned by the Dark Ages. It doesn't function well out of it.
Ahem. As you can see, Halo and Halo 2 are obvious choices.
Oh, yeah, if it didn't take over a year to port it to the PC with less than it had on the X-Box, I could see it. My mates made a big deal of it, I couldn't see why. Its the only thing keeping the X-Box afloat.

We'll see.
Might and Magic is a role-playing game.
Heroes of Might and Magic is a turn based strategy game based on that.
It's not too difficult really. You have one or more castles from which you recruit heroes and monsters to conquer other castles. The monsters available depend on the caslte and how built up it is. Resources are gathered per turn in the form of mines. Armies have a limited amount of movement on the map, depending on the speed of the slowest creature in the army (I, II, and III had heroes wandering around transporting creatures, IV made away with that and made heroes a type of unique creature).
Battles are in a turn based battle mode.
Not sure if that's your type of game though.
