First Posts & Gun Smilies - Unholy Alliance Or Awesomest Thing Ever?

Whereyouthinkyougoing

Okay, what is the deal with first posts and gun smilies?

I don't get it. Now granted, I'm neither 14 nor male, but I don't think I'd get it even then.
Is this the only forum in the whole wide web with gun smilies? Or "Up Yours" smilies, for that matter?
Because if it is, I could sort of see the attraction. If not - not so much.

Do people use these smilies just to spruce up their post with a little color (hint: yellow is a color, too) or are they trying to actually make a point? If so, what is it?

Please discuss, so that I may not live out my life unenlightened. Thank you.

Perhaps because no one else uses them they think everyone will go "hey, cool! How did you do that?" if they do.

Or it could just be an attempt to draw attention to themselves. A smilie way of saying "I'm here! Please accept me!"

It's for impact. Surely, if my first post includes a gun, I will be noticed and liked by everyone!

But see, that's exactly what I'm wondering about. Now, I only frequent one other forum besides this, and there, smilies are actually *gasp* disabled, so I honestly don't know about the rest of the internet, but I can't for the life of me imagine that our smilies are so OMFG teh c00l3est evar!!! Heh! That trout smiley is just too much fun to pass up, although I've even stopped using that very much. I usually used them in humorous intent as well. For example, there were a couple of posters on here ( who will remain forever nameless ) who insisted on making slightly suggestive comments whenever I mentioned my grandaughters. It became de riguer for me to post gun smiles in response. Kinda like a running joke. :)

Yeah... a first post with more sniper rifles and uzis than text generally makes me look at the name, file it away, and say, "Don't bother responding to this person ever. They're not to be taken seriously. Probably some 14 y/o kid."

And now I'm torn between apologizing to the 14 y/o's who aren't that dumb, and saying, 'screw it. you don't get a legal opinion. Suck it up.' :p

Gun smilies are kind of lame, but this :upyours: is the worse goddamn smilie in the history of being blasphemous in connection with the Internets. Using :upyours: in any context (serious or ironic), makes your point irrelevant, lowers your IQ, makes your penis smaller, makes you blind, grows hair on your knuckles, raises your risk of ass cancer and shaves 5 years off the end of your life.

I don't generally see the point for smilies in OP. There are certain occasions where it makes sense, such as PM announcing Amy's birthday, but for the most part I think they are stupid.

When they are in a response post, it normally has a point, such as a personal reference or insuring that people understand you are joking or being sarcastic.
