The truth about G(g)od

Here's the thing most of you already know, yet some of you seem to fail to understand. These threads, in reference to relgion, gather so much attention from everyone because it is simply a question we do not have the means to truly answer.

Sure, we all have our beliefs. We all even have a doubt or two, but the truth, and i mean the ACTUAL truth is, that we don't really know the truth. So for the sake of our sanity, lets argue about more tangible things in relation to relgion. Such as the politics and ethics behind it, or whether people should even practice organized religion or not. Grantid, these are circular arguments to nearly the same degree as the "do you believe in God?" question, but if your knowledgable about the issues i'm sure some good points can at least be made.

I hope i am speaking on behalf of most of you on this forum...

There's a tea cup orbiting Pluto. You can't prove there isn't, so you have to accept it.

I accept it and will speak the truth of it to all who have doors upon which I can knock.

Oh no, I've made a whole career out of arguing about things that we can't really know and have no tangible evidence. If I can't argue about abstract concepts and why Jesus was a wicked sinner I'll be bored to death.

Its really quite funny you know. Hundreds and hundreds of people claim to have seen UFO's, most of which I'll admit are hoaxers, although they hve been spotted by many credible people. Military pilots, respected, sober individuals who are picked for their higher than average eye sight, who I bet wouldn't be willing to risk all of their credibility over something they didn't truly see. So people who believe that, in a universe of (proven) billions of billions of possibly habitable planets, maybe, just maybe, one of them has produced species that can do things we can't do, these people are taken for chumps and mocked. And yet people who believe there is an invisible man in the sky, who watches everything you do at all times to make sure you are good, and who demands eternal love and worship are deemed credible and even respected individuals? I say there is every bit just as much chance that UFO's have visited Earth than a god exists. Probably more. But don't hold your breath, the aliens will land first.

Incorrect.

Christians, for example, KNOW that their God is the only and true God and *insert preaching here*. They KNOW it to be the truth.

Non-religious people know that you can't know the truth.

The difficulty in debating this is that you'll never get the Christians to think that they don't KNOW the absolute full truth, because to them, they do.

Actually, I am one of the most religious people you'll ever meet and I know that you can't know the truth.

I hold that which is true for me and nothing more. I would never presume to know the truth for you.

An excellent idea. I find it far more interesting to discuss the role and relevance of religion and, potentially, of an existant God, than to discuss repeatedly old theological debates regarding the essentially unsolvable question of God.

Though as anyone glancing at the threads in question will note, I am more than happy to engage in such old theological debates anyway.

the observable, honest, and objective truith is precisely as stated. none of us KNOW a damd thing, other then the possibility. we can FEEL certain things, even 'believe in' them. and there is nothing WRONG with doing so. but objectively, all speculation as to the nature and origen of that which is greater then ourselves, begins in speculation and ends in speculation.

we can surmise from our continued existence that 'it' or 'they' intend us no harm. but that's about it. other then communing directly with whatever we feel ourselves to be in the presence of when we are alone with it.
