n00bs and repeated threads, what's the problem?

Infinite Revolution

since new people join this forum everyday it is obvious that certain general debates are going to be repeated ad infinitum. so why do people who have been here a while have to complain about repeated threads? you can't expect every new member to trawl through all the forum archives to find out what's already been said - everyone wants to voice their opinion on a topic that interests them. if you've already exhausted your debating repertoire on a particular topic then just ignore threads that discuss that topic and make your own 'original' one. i don't get why 'n00bs' (which i assume is internet shorthand for newbies) get obliquely flamed all the time for wanting to discuss genuinely interesting and stimulating topics that forum 'veterans' may have got bored of. I have always found that even though many such debates are constructed with two diametrically opposite points of view, every single person who engages with the debate has their own take on it and so you get infinite numbers of opinions - so for me no repeated debate gets boring unless i feel that my point of view is not being acknowledged.

so the point of this thread is: is there anyone who finds this equally strange? and can anyone rationalise for me why some members feel the need to flame 'n00bs' for wanting to discuss fundamental debates which have been had numerous times before.

i've got to go to work in a minute so i'll have to leave you all to it.

Raises post count to say it's been done before, then just start to debate it again anyways..

Of course, there are the times when there's 3 of them on the first page already.

we already had a thred like this

sorry, couldn't help myself.

It only really annoys me when they start a thred that is exactly the same as another thred on the first page.

"omg, bush is teh winner, ur stoopid if u don't agree w/ me."

That bothers me.

To be honest, I think the fact that there are so many new people means it should never really be an issue. If the 'veterans' don't want to debate it again they don't have to - but if you look at the post counts of these threads you'll see that there are certainly people who do want to. It does always astonish me though when you see an almost identical thread to one already on the page take off - are the same people debated the same things in two places? Or do only half of the people see one thread?

On a totally random side note, your location - how are you in Edinburgh and Jersey? Do you have really long legs? :p

Personally, and I believe I'll probably speak for more than just myself here, I'm more likely to complain about repeat threads if, and ONLY if:

it's an older poster that's putting the same stuff we've seen in recent weeks;
it's a new poster posting the same stuff over and over to raise postcount; OR
there are already threads along the same lines on the first page.

If they're a new member and there are no threads of the type on the first page and they only start the one.....I usually either just re-state my opinion on the topic, or ignore the thread.

because having 9 threads that say "god exists" or "god doesn't exist" is rediculous. You could easily search threads, look at the threads from the last day (its only 6 pages usually) or just look at the front page most of the time. The rest of us have no problem doing it, only n00bs (and yes, there is a difference between n00b and newbie)

The difference is that, while "newbies" are new to the boards, they're still willing to make sense, take suggestions (eg "knock it the fucking fuck off, you fucker"), respect forum etiquette and avoid acting obnoxious. The only difference between a "poster" and a "newbie" is the post count.
"N00bs", on t'other hand, are annoying, pestulant, use moving smilies, and incoherent. One can still be a "n00b" with a quintuple digit post count.

There are some interesting topics that get brought up, but as far as I'm concerned, most of material on these forums aren't worth reading. If anyone, "n00bs" or "veterans" wants to seriously engage in serious topics, they should just go to college or post threads on topic-specific sites. God forbid anyone should debate with people that are corporeal or have to debate with actual economists or politican scienntists... it's sooo hard, you actually have to be convincing!

THAT'S NOT WHAT WE WERE DISCUSSING
Where the hell do you get your topics? You're just completely non-sequitur....that's pretty well the behaviour that is often complained about in the newbs vs. n00bs argument. Geez.

god forbid people come on here for...oh, I don't know...fun? I spend my entire day debating and/or discussing literature and education. Those are hardly my only interests, and so I enjoy occasionally discussing with other people on here (Cat-Tribe and law, Fass and civil rights, etc.) Maybe you need to reevaluate some things if you think we're taking this incredibly seriously. And if you don't think most of the forum is worth reading, why are you here in the first place?

If you're bored, like I am, you can search for my profile in the Huge List O' Members and discover that I have about 4,500 posts. Of course, it also says I am 94 years old, so I'm not sure how much I want to trust Jolt.
To make matters worse, when I tried to ignore myself (I've never got anything nice to say, and I get enough negativity from the world already without listening to myself), it said I couldn't put myself on my ignore list. Fascism, that's what it is. Pure British fascism, against which the only conceivable reaction is to blow up the Jolt Head Offices and overload the British mail system with novelty masks.

"n00bs and repeated threads, what's the problem?"

You have to admit that reading the fifteenth thread about "Is there a God?" gets to be a crashing bore.

If "n00bs" would utilize the search function button at the top of the page and use key words to find earlier threads, they could resurrect the one they like by posting to it, rather than creating an entirely new one. Yes? :)

no. that may be in the rules but rules are for the unimaginative. who wants to read other's opinions without expressing their own? it doesn't hurt anyone to start a new thread on a popular topic. if it takes up too much server space, delete an old topic, don't make new people accept opinions that have already been voiced without allowing them the space to voice their own.

Haha, I remember when people called me a n00b for suggesting we shut down the "Last person to post here wins" thread. This was before a thread length limit had been discussed and waaay before the mods banned stupid (well, obviously and unjustifiably stupid) threads.

Now I get to sit back and be a nearly three year old nation who remembers Marathon. Oh yeah.
