Depending on how you look at it, I'm either from nowhere in particular, or kind of all over. Born in Sacramento (California). Moved to Kenya when I was six months old. Moved to Sierra Leone when I was three. Moved to Malaysia when I was five. Moved to Botswana when I was nine. Moved to Italy when I was twelve. Moved to Belgium when I was thirteen. Moved back to California for college when I was seventeen, at which point my parents moved to Zambia, so that's where I spent my summers for the first two years of uni. My parents moved back to the U.S. right before I started my third year of college, this time to D.C. - so that's where I spent the summer before my fourth year. I graduated last June, and I now live (oddly enough) in Sacramento, where I was born.

its really interesting reading that wiki article... this place has more history than i thought!
It was the original point of departure for the Pilgrim Fathers aboard the Mayflower. A memorial can be found on Town Quay. Since that time it has been the last port of call for literally millions of emigrants who left the Old World to start a new life in the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and other parts of the world.
It was sacked in 1338 by the French, including the pirate Grimaldi, who used the plunder to help found the principality of Monaco. After this attack, the city walls were built, some of which remain as ruins today. The city walls include God's House Tower, built in 1417, the first purpose-built artillery fortification in England.
The Viking King Canute the Great is supposed to have defeated the Anglo-Saxon King Ethelred the Unready here in 1014 and his fabled attempt to "command" the tide to halt may have taken place in Southampton.
Although Stone Age settlements are known to have existed in the area, the first permanent settlement was established by the Romans. Known as Clausentum, it was an important trading port
The Second World War hit Southampton particularly hard, partly because of its strategic importance as the major industrial area on the South Coast and partly because of the city's links to the Supermarine Spitfire fighter aircraft, which was invented and manufactured in Southampton. Pockets of Georgian architecture remain, but much of the city was levelled. (the memorial by the Bargate, part of the old city walls, states that over 25,000 civilians lost their lives in the bombing of the city)
In common with most of the luxury liners of the time, the RMS Titanic sailed from here
Southampton is home to the world's oldest surviving bowling green
the Office of National Statistics have referrred to it as the Southampton Urban Area with a population of around 442,969 (2001 census)
The King Edward VI Grammar School, now a selective Independent Co-educational secondary school, was founded in the city in 1553 by William Capon. (my school!)
Southampton has England's second-longest stretch of surviving Medieval wall, the longest being in York
The city is home to the University of Southampton, Southampton Solent University and West Quay shopping centre, which was the biggest city-centre shopping mall in Europe when it was opened
It is also the headquarters of Ordnance Survey, the UK's national mapping agency.
Southampton is graced with many green spaces and parks. The largest of these is Southampton Common, parts of which are used to host the annual summer festival (designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, the common includes 326 acres of woodland, parkland, rough grassland, ponds, wetlands, nature trails, a paddling pool, a children's play area, a model yachting pond, and a fishing lake)
The Liberal Democrats control the City Council.
According to the Sunday Times newspaper league table, Southampton University is perennially in the top ten for research (its primary focus), and has close links with MIT in the United States. Southampton is probably best known as an engineering, science and social science university. In the most recent RAE assessment (2001), it has the only engineering faculty in the country to receive the highest rating (5*) across all disciplines. According to the Times Higher Educational Supplement, Southampton has the second largest research income among British universities for the physical sciences and mathematics, and the third largest research income for engineering and technology.
