recent gigs? best gigs?

we're all a musical bunch here on NS, right? well i went to the best gig i've ever been to (so far) last night, and was wondering what gigs y'all have been to recently, or what the best gigs you've ever been to are?

for me, last night, it was Pitchshifter (my favourite band) playing in quite a small venue, only about 600 people there... a mosh pit only just beaten in terms of sheer energy and violence by either Testament or Machine Head. i got some video here (http://www.hlj.me.uk/music/pitchshifter%20video%201.wmv). t'was the first gig i've been to in months (since Megadeth back in last summer), but should be going to Download Festival this year hopefully (Metallica (again), Prodigy, alice in chains, avenged sevenfold, deftones, clutch (any good?), tool, god forbid (again), korn (again), soulfly (again), trivium... gonna be good!!)

i just wanted to share the video, really ;) :p
(and some pics from last night :): one (http://www.hlj.me.uk/music/Photo-0102.jpg), two (http://www.hlj.me.uk/music/Photo-0103.jpg), three (http://www.hlj.me.uk/music/Photo-0104.jpg))

My last gig was playing three venues for the Arctic Winter Games.
The first was a snafu and the second & third weren't anything to crow about (it was a matter of planning and arrangement, and thankfully not our performance).
For example: the song that actually warranted the most positive response was about constipation. Seriously.
I'm not tweaked out of interest for public performance, but i'd been looking forward to that for a year and a half. I got approximately ... a vest out of it.
No contacts, one future date, some good practice/bonding experience and a coffee.

mm maiden are pretty good live... they put on a good show but they just seemed lacking in energy when i saw em :(
might have just been a bad gig (end of the tour i guess) cos i generally hear good things :)

I think the best gig I ever did - and I've done many and had wonderful times - was playing Fitzgerald's and finding out Rob Zombie was in the audience and getting to meet him, have a beer with him, and have him tell me I was a kick-ass drummer. This was forever and a day ago.

Sweet.

The best other person's gig I've been to was seeing Jesus and the Mary Chain open for a then mostly unknown Nine Inch Nails at #s (Numbers).

Excluding gigs that I've played (which imo were the best :p).... probably Download last year (I also have a ticket for this year yay!), Alice Cooper, or Ayreon. That could all change if I get my hands on a Radiohead ticket tomorrow *fingers crossed*

As fanatical as I am about extreme metal, I think the best live show I've ever attended was Def Leppard. However, on a much more recent note, I went to the Headbanger's Ball show for Cradle of Filth; that was fuckin' intense! Now, going back to my "I'm Finally Legal" era, Exhorder & Acid Bath were always a blast at the little hole-in-the-wall local bars!!!

They are. Few bands manage to sound as good on stage as they can on their studio albums - Maiden does.
The last three concerts I've been to were all Maiden concerts - I believe it's been two years ago already that I've seen them live, but they did indeed put on a great show.
And you just gotta love three guitars, it makes them sound so wholesome full!

As for the DoD - that was more like a dud! No comparison to BNW - and what happened to the layout? Where's the cool Eddie?

*shakes fist* Outrage!

The only concert i've been to is Queen and Paul Rodgers in New Jersey in October, and i'm going to see them again in April in Vancouver. They are my favorite band, so it was awesome, though not the same without Freddie. I wish i had seen them in concert while he was alive.

I don't get to see many shows because i live in a city of only 16,000, we don't get many bands here, and i don't live very close to the cities that have concerts. I only went to the one in New Jersey because i was going to New York then anyway.

They interviewd the CoF vocal coach on NPR the other day. IT was interesting because she explained about how the screaming is not done with vocal cords but with the upper larynx or something like that.

I believe it's called "head-voice"? While that might be true - if he sang differently I might actually like CoF. Then again, I'm more of a classic Heavy Metal man myself...

Best gig soundwise: Incubus at the Manchester Apollo. Was a brilliant gig, they sounded perfect, the balance was right and hell, even the lighting was spot on.

Most fun gig: Metallica at Leeds festival. Why? Caus' even those who were calling them all the names under the sun for being 'sell outs' etc were still chanting 'Master, MASTER!!!' when the time came.

The one I want to see: The Weakerthans.

oh yeah... and Frantic even sounds pretty good live.
they were great at download 04 - kept us waiting in the rain for 2 hours but when joey from slipknot came on the drums with awesome double kick-pedal style, and we were right in front of the bass speakers, it was just unforgettable :D

my mate says the best gig he's ever been to was (apart from last night) napalm death at download last year... the only word he can use to describe the noise and experience is "assaulted" :p

Because of who they are:
Miles Davis
Dizzy Gillespie

Wildest, most engaging show-
Probably the Dirty Dozen Brass Band in a barn in Davis, Ca. They invited me back to thier hotel to jam, but I chickened out. (what I should have said was, "Ah man, I don't have my axe but I'll totally hang and listen to you all," then given the keys to the chick I took and told her I'd come get my car if I ever decided to come back...)

Pharaoh Sanders was pretty badass, and so was Ornette Coleman.

Jeff "Tain" Watts also was badass.

For non-jazz shows probably either The Cherry Poppin' Daddies with Skankin' Pickle or the one with Mephiskapholes.

Oh, and Pink Floyd, even if it was thier Division Bell tour.

Best gig?

Rorschach and Econochrist at ABC-NO-RIO in August '92.

Coming from a person who has already been to (*checks diary*) 57 gigs this year, that's quite an endorsement.

Other damn fine shows: Neurosis, '93, Stalingrad, circa '96, The Pattern, circa '99, Pine Hill Haints, 2004, Fugazi, '89, Rob McCullough, 2005.

Far and away the best gig I have ever seen was Broken Social Scene, in Belfast on the 10/02/06.

The fact that it was my 20th birthday has nothing to do with it, BSS were simply incredible.

Second best is probably Biffy Clyro in Glasgow on 14/12/05, where they played The Vertigo of Bliss straight through.

The most recent show I've been to was at the very beginning of this month. One of my favorite groups who are from Finland, The 69 Eyes, kicked off their first U.S. tour ever and I got to attend the very first show. It was definately amazingand I had waited 6 years hoping that they'd come to America to tour and was relieved when they finally did. It's right up there with seeing Type O Negative back in 2003 when I followed them on tour and attended 4 shows on the tour. It was great.

Well, I've not managed to attend even one gig since I moved to this godforsaken backwater (Georgia)...

Indeed... to show how long ago it was I last got to go to a gig... the last band I saw were Nine Inch Nails supported by Atari Teenage Riot (who were absolutely terrible, live).... so that's, what... 6 years ago or something?

Best gig - Ministry, at Rock City.

The far south of Brazil is not on the touring Itinery for anyone so no recent gigs at all.

Best gig - difficult choice - Knebworth 1979 or Motörhead at the Hammy Odean the same year. I have to go with Knebworth for being the end of an era.

Wow, the most recent concert I went to was last July...saw the Pixies but missed the opening band. I enjoyed myself, but hated the venue and the fact that the Pixies didn't play their two best songs. Most of the other songs they played were good, though.

The best concert would have to be one of the Local H concerts I went to, or perhaps Stabbing Westward (R.I.P.)/Placebo. I've seen Napalm Death twice, but both times there were lesser bands headlining, in the second case a crap band that I didn't stay for. (Nile and Cannibal Corpse, respectively.)

Ministry wasn't all that good the first time, I didn't care for the opening acts, but the Ministry/Revolting Cocks tour should be good if I can end up going.

Another few to mention...

The Prodigy - Simply class, so much energy both in their music and their stage presence... They put GnR to shame...

Blue Tones, circa 2002 - Past their 'Britpop' high point, but a gig by pro's. Small hall, but they filled it so well, engaged the crowd and really got everyone going. Not a bad thing in a club which is usually reserved for thrash/metal/heavy rock where the regulars turned out.

the most amazing musical experience i have ever had was in a dive in little havana in miami.

the local masters of afrocuban drumming were using the place for friday night jam sessions including themselves and the young men who wanted to become masters some day.

between 6 and 12 men playing various drums at the same time working to a rhythm so complicated i could only let it wash over me while an old man sang santaria songs (i think. it turns out i cant understand anything of cuban spanish)

The best i've seen to date was Mudhoney, at the start of last year. It was a small venue of about 200 people (Maybe more? I'm not sure, it was hard to tell.), and I got up against the barricade about a metre from the band. And they played pretty much everything I wanted them to play, and did two encores - and it was crazy. They had heaps of energy. I was expecting good, but they were nothing short of amazing. :D

clutch (any good?)

You'd probably like them. Stoner rock-ish. I imagine they'd put on a good live show.

Best gig ever - 65daysofstatic at Leicester Charlotte, 15th October 2005. Small venue (capacity 390), but they filled it, and pretty much everyone there was completely into the music. Best moment was 390 voices drowning out the sample in Retreat! Retreat! by shouting 'We will not retreat, this band is unstoppable!'
Only marginally better than when I saw them at Manchester Academy 3 on March 4th this year.
If only the sound guy there wasn't so fucking appalling at his job...maybe it's partially down to the equipment he's working with, but he never gets the levels right, and the sound in general is just atrocious.

That gig beat Rammstein, System of a Down, Dead Kennedys (admittedly without Jello Biafra), The Haunted, Manic Street Preachers, Soulfly, Bauhaus, Electric Soft Parade, Green Day, Placebo, Lostprophets, Dropkick Murphys, The Offspring, Goldfinger, and the Bouncing Souls.

Saw Oceansize supported by Pure Reason Revolution last night (in fact the gig finished pretty much at exactly the same time PM posted this thread...). That was immense. The singer nearly fell on top of me...

Coming up I've got 65daysofstatic supporting Hundred Reasons next weekend, Secret Machines the Tuesday after, Australian Pink Floyd on April 26th, and Me First & The Gimme Gimmes on May 8th. Then Download in June :D

Wow... are they still doing gigs at the Charlotte?

Last thing I saw there was a goth night... all 'local' bands (Nottingham and Leicester). I think it was Manuskript, Emma Conquest and The Horatii.

Best night of music I ever saw on the Leicester circuit was probably "Prolapse"... can't remember if I saw them at the Charlotte, but I saw them at the Pump and Tap, and Abbey Park.

I think the best gig I was at was Bon Jovi in Lansdowne Road, Dublin in June 2003. It was the first time I had a weekend away with my girlfriend, though, so it may have been in part to do with the slushy romance bullshit. They were excellent anyway - can't wait for their Croke Park gig in May!

I really loved the second Metallica gig I was at at the RDS in Dublin, also in 2003. The Darkness were supporting them - they too rocked. Also the first Iron Maiden gig in The Point in (you guessed it) Dublin*.

All these gigs showed not only real musical talent, but energy and passion, and a fantastic atmosphere among the crowd.

All the good bands go to sodding Dublin, not here :( The Darkness have played here twice, but none of the big international bands mentioned above.

Indeed they are. They get some pretty big bands - the Fall played there last night (though as I said above, I was in Nottingham seeing Oceansize). They have a gigography page on the current site, and there's some massive bands there (massive now, not when they played) - Muse, Radiohead, NOFX, Coldplay, Gomez, Mogwai, Kyuss, Oasis...ok, so none of them were within the last 5 years...
Not heard of the Pump and Tap, and I don't know if they do gigs at Abbey Park anymore. Not heard of any since I've been here (about two and a half years). They've got the Summer Sundae festival - no really big bands, but some decent underground and up-and-coming bands. Patti Smith played last year IIRC.
The Uni has some bands occasionally...Graham Coxon's playing soon...and De Montfort hall has some as well - Franz Ferdinand and Fun Lovin' Criminals recently, and it's where I'm seeing the Australian Pink Floyd.

I narrowly missed seeing The Offspring at the Charlotte, just before they got big... but I did see dEUS there.

I saw Pop Will Eat Itself at DMU Student Union.

I wonder if Sumemr Sundae has replaced the old Abbey Park (this would have been about 5/6 years ago). Saw some pretty good stuff there... Asian Dub Foundation, Transglobal Underground... and the infamous Babble Soundsystem...

Pump and Tap is (or used to be) down near the DMU Halls of Residence/ football ground, etc.

Ah, Essex. Truly is a shithole when it comes to live music (with the obvious exception of the V Festival...well, maybe not). I've seen about 1 good band in Essex apart from at V, and that was the Strokes (before they got big) in 2001...maybe 2000. And they weren't that great. Apparently they've got better, but I still wouldn't want to see them again.

Heheh, sounds cool. I don't think so, anyway. If there is, it'd be very underground. How many of those bands have enough of a following to justify the cost of a tour out here? Not many, sadly...we had the Melvins about 4 years ago, but that's all I can think of. (But I was too young for the 18+ show at the time so I missed them)

I freeloaded a couple of albums, and i'm going to buy them when I have some spare cash. I'd recommend them, particularly the album Amplifier Worship.

Oh yeah, and check out Electric Wizard's Dopethrone album as well if you haven't yet. Possibly the heaviest i've ever heard, in a good way.

Heard of them, but hadn't checked them out 'till now. Just looked them up and it seems to be my sort of thing. :D

I've been meaning to have a look at the band Trouble, but i'm having trouble finding their songs online to check out. If I saw a CD in a store i'd probably take a gamble, but eh...from Ebay is a bit more of a pain.

Hmm, I usually buy stuff through ebay or stonerrock.com. They seem pretty cheap though. Might look into it. :)

Ahh, okay. They're regarded as a "classic" doom band, but they're oh-so-hard to find.

Saw Oceansize supported by Pure Reason Revolution last night (in fact the gig finished pretty much at exactly the same time PM posted this thread...). That was immense. The singer nearly fell on top of me...

Don't suppose Sucioperro were also supporting?

Last gig I saw was Earth/Sunn0))) a couple of months ago. I particularly enjoyed it.

Haven't got to see Earth yet, but Sunn0))) about nine months ago were pretty good. Quite possibly the loudest low end I have ever had the experience of being subjected to. Khanate were pretty entertaining when I saw them a few months back too, but for some reason they had trouble holding peoples' attention. Possibly something to do with the fact that the local supports had played incredibly good sets immediately beforehand.

Ah, here be a story. Sucioperro turned up about 20 minutes after they were due to go on, while Pure Reason Revolution were setting up for their slot. Sucioperro begged and pleaded with the management to let them go on, and eventually they were allowed to play a couple of songs (well, 4). Considering doors were meant to be at 7, and the end of the gig should've been around 10, and Sucioperro went on at about 8, this led to much confusion.
PRR were late on, because of Sucioperro, but still played their entire set. Oceansize, who didn't get a proper soundcheck beforehand (because of PRR's diva-ish nature), spent 10 minutes longer than normal setting up, so in the end they only played about a 40 minute set. They were not happy, the crowd was not happy, I was not happy.
Yes, Oceansize are class. Sucioperro and PRR, on the other hand, are wankers.

That's a pity. Sucioperro are really brilliant. And the guys in the band were really sound when I met them at a Biffy gig in Glasgow last year. Not good about Oceansize only getting a short set, wonder why PRR played their full thing.

They didn't seem that great...kinda averagey. The bass player was pretty good, and they were very polite...Maybe if they'd been able to do a longer set they'd have made more of an impression.
PRR probably did a full set because it's a bit difficult to split their songs; they really do run into one another. I love the music, they seem a bit arrogant though.
Oceansize still played Ornament/The Last Wrongs - that's pretty much what I went for :D Such a beautiful song.

Here's their myspace, only two songs on though, so it's not much use: http://www.myspace.com/sucioperro

I would YSI a song or two, but I don't know how the mods are about that sort of thing...

They're a band to check out, they've an album out on Captains of Industry sometime in June.

Ornament/Last Wrongs is one of my favourite songs ever. Even if Everyone into Position wasn't a patch on Effloresce ;)

I've not heard Effloresce, only Everyone Into Position. If it is as good as EIP, then I'll try to get my hands on it somehow. Couldn't find it a torrent for it.

If you want to TG or email me a YSI link, feel free.

So glad uni gave me the excuse to get away.

Where in Essex are you?

Essex used to have a good rave scene, abck in the early-to-mid 90's.

:p Bit early for me (born 1985). Plus I'm really not into that sort of music at all. Well, maybe the Prodigy, but that's about it.

Ah... yes, more than a decade older than you, then... Prodigy kicks ass... but so did the Chemical Brothers, Leftfield, Underworld... Josh Wink.. etc..

There's usually some good in every music scene. I even once heard a Jazz record I liked. :)

Nothing too recent (the last decent gig I went to was before Crimbo), but I'm off to see Foo Fighters and the Strokes in June, and a couple of us are trying to get hold of some Radiohead tickets for the Blackpool gig (damn you for being popular, Radiohead). I'm also off to Leeds again, so should be an interesting summer. And by interesting I mean expensive.

Chemical Brothers are ok, I get a bit bored if I listen to more than a couple of songs though. Don't know much Leftfield, and I've not heard of Josh Wink. Underworld (named after a dog they won money on at Romford interestingly enough), on the other hand, have simply been played too much. A guy I live with thinks Born Slippy is the best song ever written, and he plays it over and over again. I hate it now. And there's no good emo.

Heheheh, I'm going to see Radiohead for free, at V. And I'm hopefully going to Reading as an Oxfam volunteer. And going to Truck as a steward. Plus Download as a punter. 4 festivals for me this year :D
