Deal or No Deal and the primacy of existence

I was watching the quite excellent worldwide phenomenon "Deal or No Deal" the other night (the game with the boxes). This idiot woman was playing and she seemed to think that having a "positive mindset" and not contemplating she might have a low value in her box she would win big. Does she believe that thinking positive will change the number written inside her box and make her pick other boxes with low numbers in?

Conscience perceives existence and wishing the world to be different than how it is will not work. This idea is known as the primacy existence and Atlas Shrugged first introduced me to it. In the book people who do not adhere to it generally end up dead or destitute, this woman just ended up not doing particuarly well and seemed really shocked and devestated when she did not win.

I believe some people reject the primacy of existence argument, but I do not the reason.

I'm thinking about going on that show and hope to go home with at least £50,000

If Noel Edmands came up with the Idea for the show then he could make his millions back through it.

Oh god... the only good thing about that show is when someone turns down a huge offer and wins only a few pounds (or whatever currency applies). I love it when people who think they deserve something for nothing actually end up with (almost) nothing.

I missed todays but I saw yesterdays, I can't belive he dealt 2 deals to soon!

Imagine going with £20,000 and he could of had £60,000 that must have been gutting!

maybe she watches too much oprah.

ive seen oprah suggest that the universe is actively teaching us lessons such that if you, for example, lose your luggage on an airplane flight, its not that some pervert luggage handler wanted your sexy lingerie for himself, its that the universe is trying to teach you not to be so attached to your stuff

so she may have thought that this was the universe's way of making her a million dollars richer so she could learn a great lifes lesson.

I'm not keen on this show. I don't like the whole shameless greed of it all. It was interesting the first couple of times when I started working out what route is statistically more likely to win you money (Going all the way to the end and openning one of the last two boxes - the deal given is always significantly lower than mean average of the remaining numbers).

However I do rate this show above the stockmarket, because at least this game isn't one of the major causes of the business cycle. To be any good at the stockmarket you need insider infomation, which is illegal.

Yes but the difference between £0 and £5000 and £5000 and £15000 in terms of benefit it will bring to a not particuarly rich persons life is not the same as the difference between the two figures. If you are a millionaire with no pressing needs for cash it then makes sense to play the pure probabilty game. If I went on I would be very keen to win say £20000 as that would pay some pressing debts and would not risk it 50:50 for the chance of winning £60000.

This strategy doesn't really work when you only get to play the game once, but rather multiple times...

I was having trouble thinking of an individual strategy. Unless you count thinking the amount of money you need and taking the deal when you get it. But what if you don't get near that amount, keep going or take what you can get. Oh, I remember now. Going all the way, or close to the end and then taking the deal is a fairly sound bet. The probability that at least one top 5 number will remain in the final 5 is just about 27%, and the probability for the last two is 27.5%. (For at least one of the top 7 numbers to remain then it rises to 40%).

Lol, I agree. I saw this show for the first time when I was living in Paris. I only saw it once or twice, but both times they had booby prizes. One woman turned down an offer of a few hundred thousand euros (I think at that point the largest amount was still out there), and ended up getting a cucumber. The expression on her face was hilarious. :p

Indeed. One show last week a woman was offered £6000, and ended up with £100. Me and my housemates were pissing ourselves laughing.

If I went on it, I'd hope for a good offer fairly early (maybe around £15k) and take it. It'd just be so funny to see and hear the reactions of the crowd, the other contestants, and Noel.
