I'm getting older!

Have you guys ever had a sudden realization that you were getting older when you looked at a younger generation? You don't even have to be "old" to have one. I'm seventeen and I recently had one when I realized that the sophmores at my school were born in the 1990's.

At kickboxing training these 16/17 years old kids call me sir. I literally have to beat it out of them. "Call me sir again and I will punch your lights out." At least they have learned now to not call me sir during sparring.

Well, six of one half a dozen of the other. I just don't feel ready to be referred to in public by an honorific. I don't think I'll ever be ready.

You could always do something really amazing and get yourself knighted. That way the honorific won't make you feel old. Just pompous.

It is going to get even better than that. After about age 24 to 27 you are going to start realizing that you are a completely different person than you were 5 years ago. Your beliefs, priorities and basic outlook on life will entirely different than they were. What's more spooky, is that this will continue for the rest of your life, but you will realize that you become much much wiser than you were the 5 before.

Oh? Ever think how I feel? When I was born, WWII was still in full swing. FDR was still President. I've seen the Korean war, the war in Vietnam, the military actions in Dominician Republic, Panama, etc. The first music I remember deliberately listening to was Elvis Presley ... I saw his first appearance on TV on the Ed Sullivan Show, where they blocked the view of his hips and legs because they thought he was too "suggestive!"

Oh yeah ... and I remember when gas was less than 40 CENTS per gallon!

Whoa. I was born in '86 and I remember my sophomore year (3 years ago) like yesterday. The first time it really hit me that I was getting older was when I realised there were more people in my old high school I didn't know than I knew. It was a small school, pretty much everyone knew everyone else, and now there are so many people I don't know, it's like a completely different place.

Growing up it was "hits from the 50's" then it was "hits from the 50's and 60's" which was still okay........but now it's "the best music from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's"

I just taught a couple of 8th graders in an internship at a German highschool. They had a chapter about American highschools, so I dug out my old yearbook (good memories!!!) and showed it around.
I graduated in the States in 1995. Then I realized that most of the students in that class were born in 1992. Guess how I felt after that...

I've never had to realize it; I've always been waiting for it or digging in my heels against it, but very aware either way.

I really didn't want to turn sixteen, because that would mean my older friends would be seventeen and eighteen and everyone would be going off and being adults and I would know I'd have to get serious about that. Then that started happening anyway so I thought fuck it, I might just as well turn sixteen if fifteen's no protection. And good thing I came to peace with it 'cause my birthday's in about two weeks.

Incidently, the first sign in men that they're getting older is teenage girls no longer even give them a second glance.

There is no worse feeling in the world than the first time a man gets referred to as "so and so's dad". Don't get me wrong, being a father is the pinnacle of manhood, but the second you're seen as nothing more than "sir", it's a little disconcerting. Especially when just a few years before, you'd be takin' a girl like that home and hittin' it doggie style over your piano.

Ah ... well I've always been a sexy beast.

I am 6'4, baby blue eyes, charming as hell, have an accent that drives women insane, I play drums in bands, have long hair and tattoos ...

I have had many a woman (and man, for that matter) throw themselves at my whim.

Nowdays, the hair is long, but way gray. The eyes are still a baby blue, but so are the eyes of the kids I have with me. I play the drums still (as well as many instruments), but I do it for love of the craft rather than love of getting laid.

Such is the curse of age. At least, though, I have things I can look back on fondly from my youth when I am a toothless old man sitting in the nursing home wondering if there'll be tapioca with lunch.

Been there, done that (but programming not hardware support). The question is, do you remember computing before home computing. My first experience of using a computer was learning to program Fortran 66 (the most recent available at the time) on an ICL 1900A running under an operating system shell called George III (I assume it was Unix underneath the shell). 17? And you're already feeling older? Wait until your 31. I remember when pants didn't hang five miles down from a guy's ass, back when 13 year old girls looked like they were 13-year old girls not 25 year old hookers. When rock was rock and rap was rap and the two didn't intermingle. I used to have to walk 20 miles in the snow... barefoot... uphill both ways... I forgot what I was talking about.

Just wait until your friends start getting married and/or having kids.
Even worse: Two of my ex-girlfriends are married now. One even had her first baby over a year ago. That makes you feel old indeed...

Our first PC at home was a Zenith with 2 5.25 floppy disc drives (anyone remember those 360k wobblies?), a 19MB harddrive, and a Hercules graphic card (of course with CGA emulator).
But classics like Larry, Space Quest, or Police Quest still looked great in black/yellow :D

Or, for that matter, Xenon 2 Megablast - the best game ever made! (Aside from Loom)

This thread is having the opposite affect on me. Looking at some of these posts, I now feel younger than I did before reading this! Thanks guys!
You're welcome! Enjoy it while it lasts.

Actually, I feel very young. It's only when I think about how old I truly am that I feel anything like other than about 23. :D

Been there, done that (but programming not hardware support). The question is, do you remember computing before home computing. My first experience of using a computer was learning to program Fortran 66 (the most recent available at the time) on an ICL 1900A running under an operating system shell called George III (I assume it was Unix underneath the shell). I supported Chelsea with Osgood and Hutchinson (and still support them) I am not old, I am ancient.

In college, I took a programming course using keypunch machines and and old IBM System 36 (I think- been a while). You'd wait two hours for a punch machine, type it all in, hand your cards to the guy and go away for 2-3 hours while it sat in the queue, then come back and wait another 2 hours for another punch machine because you made 1 typo. And then when it ran again, you'd find the NEXT type, and....

Have you guys ever had a sudden realization that you were getting older when you looked at a younger generation? You don't even have to be "old" to have one. I'm seventeen and I recently had one when I realized that the sophmores at my school were born in the 1990's.
I'm a sophomore in high school (born 1990)

I realized that earlier this year when all the new freshmen joined out waterpolo team. :(

Tell me about it. Ahh the good old days (they were crap)

And for anyone here complaining about getting old, it is better than the only alternative.

Puh, I was born in '88. I still think of people born in the 90's as small children. What's really scary is the fact that children born in the year 2000 are now six.

Holy crap, I know. I remember watching the T.V. after 01-01-00 at midnight and watching all the news reports on children who were born at/around midnight.

Now they're in the first grade?!?!?!?!
