I was watching the news the other day, when Jill Carroll was mentioned. I then remembered who she was and got very angry. As I saw her pleading and crying in front of the camera, I realized how much of a traitor she was to the United States. She was saying something like, "Do whatever they want!!! Come save me!!!" While it may be sad that she is captured by Al-Qaeda terrorsts, she really got what was coming for her. She is a lone woman travling a war-torn country with no military escort, no weapon, and no armor of any kind. She was merley traveling with a translator. It's no different than someone poking something big and dangerous like a shark or tiger, then getting mauled or killed and acting like how in the world that could have happened. She should have held firm with no fear in her eyes to show the terrorists that we are a strong and patriotic country, and that she is willing to die for it. As JFK said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." In my opinion, she got what she had coming for her, and should now deal with the repercussions.

It's easy to criticize someone's actions when you weren't in that situation, but it's quite another thing when someone is standing right next to you, and you know to a moral certainty that they plan on cutting your head off with a very large knife. People talk about being willing to die for something, but when it comes down to it you'd be amazed at how you can find a reason you'd much rather live.

Anyway, she's wasn't a traitor, just someone who played a very dangerous game and lost.

Go ahead and tell me how you'd sing the Star Spangled Banner in front of their camera, but until you're in that sort of situation you'll never know. I'm willing to bet you've never even come close to being killed.

You shouldn't condemn people for making a mistake no matter how stupid. I don't know if they are using torture on her but I'd bet on it. You'd probably beg too if you were in her shoes.

She's a ditz. Without a doubt, she screwed up and got what she asked for. But I defy you or anyone else to "hold firm with no fear..." You'd like to think you'd be heroic in such a situation, but you don't know.

Also, it's not as though just being in Iraq is a death sentence. There are a lot of westerners and western-aligned Iraqis who do their jobs every day without being attacked. It wasn't all that bright to go there in the first place, but it's not certain death like those scenarios you're giving.

There's no conspiracy between Carroll and her captors; at most there might be the early signs of Stockholm syndrome. The only reason righties are accusing her of such is because she wasn't a good little girl, didn't stay in the approved hotels and didn't just accept the pre-screened and pre-approved news feeds. She provided some of the best and unbiased information about the Iraqis that we've seen.

Do you:
A) Travel by yourself with an interpreter and hope you can get by on being a journalist.

OR

B) Travel with the foreign military that is the invading force and is being repeatedly targeted by enemy forces.

Unless you are reporting on what it's like to be in a military convoy, it is safer and more reasonable to go by yourself as an independent journalist.

You, sir, are a blithering idiot. She is not a traitor by even a the farthest stretch of the word. She has not betrayed her country in any way, nor has she commited acts of war against members of her country's armed forces. She may also have taken risks by going to Iraq, but that was her perogative. If you think that you could stand firm against the torture those insurgents have undoubtedly put her through, I doubt you would have held firm with no fear in your eyes to show the terrorists that we are a strong and patriotic country, and that you are willing to die for it.
