Anyone remember the fantastic sci fi series called V? They are showing the series on the Sci Fi channel in the Uk at the moment I forgot just how great it was!

And to think I thought this thread was a rebirth of a phenomenon at another board I went to...which went as follows.

V guy: (blank post)
Random person: Who makes blank posts?
V guy: (blank post)
Random person: Stop making blank posts.
V guy: (blank post)
Random person: I dare you to say one thing.
V guy: v
Random person: Ooh, he can say a letter.
V guy: v
Random person: That's it. I'm leaving.
V guy: v

**some time later**

V guy: BOW TO THE ALMIGHTY V!!!!!!!!!
Other random person: What the hell?!?

Then after that, there was the occasional "The V is your ruler" thread. Someone then claimed W was twice as powerful, and eventually the V guy claimed that the V led an army of W's and was out to destroy X.

Wait, you meant the TV show. Never seen it. Oh yeah, and the vertical bar is your true ruler.

Is that by Spielburg? Sci-fi channel should have it.

Nope. I remeber 'Diana' eating a guinea pig and getting turned off of it when I was a kid. Watching it now, just reminds me of the 80's. Not bad for its time I guess.

No, I remember watching it as a kid on TV and getting scared when the human skin got ripped off and seeing the lizard skin under it.

Hmm, I should watch that again sometime.

Spielburg Smchielburg! It was a dodgy 1980s TV series I watched as a kid and thought was fantastic. I'm watching the repeats and loving it!

sidenote - This was one of the only TV programes to star Robert Englund - He was Freddie Kruger in the Nightmare on Elm Street films.

Spielburg did some good stuff. ^-^

Though I do think Sci-fi would have it on. Think I seen it to.

Call me cynical, but any alien race stupid enough to invade Earth for its water, after having passed the massive unguarded chunks of slush in the asteroid belt are hard to take seriously.

Its a TV show if you take it seriously your missing the point. Its worth watching just to see Michael Ironside's blatant overacting:p

I think he does a decent job as Sam Fischer in the Splinter Cell games.

I also happen to remember him from that abortion of a movie titled The Omega Code.

Oh yes. Like I said, if you want anybody to overeact, he is the man. Prime example - Total Recall

When V Miniseries first came out it was revolutionary and great Sci Fi, mmm mousy. It’s a bit dated though and hasn’t stood the test of time very well.

The series was terrible and it just got too cheesy to watch (not modulating the alien voices didn’t work at all) and that acting wasn’t it’s strong point.

They weren't really here for the water...

Indeed... in true Twilight Zone style, they were here to 'serve humans'.

Sure, they went for the water too, since it was here... there are references to their world being a desert, etc... but, as has been pointed out, if ALL they wanted was water, they could get that anywhere-ish.

Once you got your water, raising livestock is a piece of piss.

I'm not debating the relative merits of different types of farming... I'm talking about the content of the series. I don't know how much attention you actually paid to it... you are right, they were stealing the water... but, Donovan's son was one of the humans taken for food.... and the ships had these huge bays outfitted specifically for storing these kind-of pre-packed people meals.

Their agenda was supposed to be multi-pronged... but the big thing we had to 'offer'... was us.

I remember V the mini series before V the regular series. A friend of mine was convinced that my principal was an alien from V and was going to rip off her mask on graduation. (No, he didn't really think that...)

And the questions concerning the efficiency of transporting 80kg portions of food across interstellar distances never struck you? If I had access to the power supplies necessary for those kind of jaunts I wouldn't be pissing around in pursuit of meat.

Why? If, for example, your culture discovered cold fusion about the point in it's history that we discovered electricity... you'd think nothing of making a jaunt of a few lightyears for comestibles.

Also - for humans, at least, efficiency has never been a strong-point. Take the internal combustion engine for an example... we've based an economy around a machine that is not far off 100% inefficient. (Okay - I'm overstating it a little, but I believe industry figures give a rough efficiency for the internal combustion engine at about 30% - so we ARE talking about the VAST majority of waste). No reason to believe Visitor thinking is any more 'efficient'.

Lastly - I have blackberries growing in my garden. Yet, yesterday saw me getting my lunch from McDonalds, which is about five miles away.

We don't always WANT what is closer....

Also - of course, maybe the Visitors just find us unbelievably delicious... worth trudging across space for...?

EDIT: My figures were close: "Since the efficiency is presently 32%, it is obvious that further engine development will not be able to compensate for the decline of petroleum extraction..." (http://ecen.com/content/eee7/motoref.htm)
