Who will win rookie of the year?
I personally think it will be Alexander Ovechkin. I think he is a more complete player than Crosby. (Poll coming)
Eh?

ill Listen to what (Buffalo) Sabres coach Lindy Ruff recently told The Buffalo News: "He plays with incredible passion. He's a tremendous hitter when he wants to hit. He works extremely hard. He's got a bullet for a shot. If he isn't one of the best players in the league at his age or even in the game right now, I'd be hard-pressed to find a more exciting player."
Any real Hockey fan knows who is he talking about.

I chose Phaneuf since he's such a solid D and actually scores to boot. Alex and Sid are all offense with no great amount of ability beyond the goal. But the real issue here is...
Where's Lundqvist!?

Don't know, Where's Spezza?.That said, Ovechin seems to exude a certain toughness and tenacity that Crosby,as good as he is, seems to lack.Talent wise they're about equal. IMHO, The smart money however, goes to Alexander.P.S.-I Think i remember hearing that The Soviet League that Ovechin belonged to kept him for an extra year, why i'm not sure, but it probably accounts for his aforementioned traits,no?

Any real Hockey fan knows who is he talking about.BTW he is NOT talking about his own team candidate (Buffalos's Thomas Venek)

Dion is a fantastic first year defenseman, but it's hard to compare with forwards like Ovechkin and Crosby.
Perhaps Lundqvist will get the Vezina this year although I doubt it. IMHO I think Marty Gerber should get the Vezina.
Just to add...I have both Phaneuf and Lundqvist on my fantasy team oh and Gerber too. I added them early in the season and it has paid off big time seeing how I'm in first place in my league.

Spezza got screwed by Ottawa, in terms of competing for the Calder. Before the lockout he was brought up just enough from the Minors to qualify for the Rookie of the Year, but not long enough to compete for it. With a new coach who actually plays him, both Spezza and Ottawa are much better off.

There’s a lot more to choose from than people think. Svatos and Phaneuf are for real candidates that have to be considered.
Dion Phaneuf plays like a 25 year old star defenceman. Why Team Canada didn’t take him as one of the top blueliners instead of a bunch of has-beens…grrrrr.
Marek Svatos has been great this season in Colorado. Any other year he’d be a lock for the Caldar Trophy. For a lot of this season he was leading the Avalanche in scoring, up until he got injured for the season. Being the top scorer on a team with forwards like Colorado is more impressive than being the top scorer in Washington or Pittsburgh.
Sidney Crosby is still very young but has been doing a lot, despite the team he’s on self-destructing from bad seasons and long term injuries, making their offseason moves look like a disaster in the making. Every player they brought in during the offseason to insulate Crosby has sucked or had a season ending injury. Being able to play, when all the top players they put around you have been disasters on ice, is hard. Crosby is a playmaker and a scorer. It’s painful watching him put in a solid effort all the time and make the big play to some lunch pail forward who might has well be holding a telephone pole, who blows it. Crosby has the media riding him on the one hand and isn’t getting much support from the team. People complain about him getting the Assistant Captain badge so young, but if you watch that team, he’s the only giving 100% out there. So they should give the ‘A’ to a floater instead to fit into their team floater concept?
Ovechkin has been given a huge amount of leeway to play pure offensive hockey in Washington this season. Ovechkin is not a complete player, although he is bigger and does play the body harder. When his team gets the puck in their zone, he’s already zipping off passed the centerline. He never plays in his own zone and is a pure scorer. In the last couple of games, the coaching staff has been riding him to start playing in both ends of the rink a bit more. He’s even been benched. It’s hard to compare him to Crosby directly because they are different styles with completely different team designs. Washington was already completely disassembled and rebuilding when Ovechkin arrived. In Pittsburgh they put a lot of talented players around Crosby and they all sucked.
Ovechkin is a pure sniper and power forward; while Crosby is a playmaker and scorer. If you only have one talented player on your team then you want Ovechkin, but otherwise I’d want to have Crosby in my lineup.
