'South Park'-Scientology Battle Rages On (http://www.beliefnet.com/story/188/story_18805_1.html)

New York, March 17, 2006 -- "South Park" has declared war on Scientology. Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of the animated satire, are digging in against the celebrity-endorsed religion after a controversial episode mocking Scientologist Tom Cruise was yanked abruptly from the schedule Wednesday--with an Internet report saying it was covert warfare by Cruise that led to its departure.

"So, Scientology, you may have won THIS battle, but the million-year war for earth has just begun!" the "South Park" creators said in a statement Friday in Daily Variety. "Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies... You have obstructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail!" [ ROFLMFAO!!! ]

The Internet blogger hollywoodinterrupted.com said Thursday that Cruise threatened to not promote "Mission: Impossible 3," a surefire summer blockbuster, if the offending episode ran. Comedy Central is owned by Viacom, as is Paramount, which is putting out the film.

But Cruise's representative, Arnold Robinson, told The Associated Press Friday that the mega-star made no such demands.

"Not true," Robinson said. "I can tell you that he never said that."

A call by The Associated Press to a Paramount representative was not returned Friday.

The episode in question, "Trapped in the Closet," which first aired last November, shows Scientology leaders hailing Stan, one of the show's four devilish fourth-graders, as a savior. A cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out. An animated John Travolta, another famous Scientologist, enters the closet to try to get him out.

The battle began in earnest earlier this week when Isaac Hayes, another celebrity Scientologist and longtime show member--voicing the ladies' man Chef --quit the show, saying he could no longer tolerate its religious "intolerance and bigotry."

Stone and Parker didn't buy that either.

On Monday, Stone told The Associated Press, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith in Scientology...He has no problem--and he's cashed plenty of checks--with our show making fun of Christians."

A Comedy Central spokesman said Friday that the network pulled the controversial episode to make room for two shows featuring Hayes.

"In light of the events of earlier this week, we wanted to give Chef an appropriate tribute by airing two episodes he is most known for," the spokesman said.

'South Park' Wars: Revenge on the Chef
“Oh my God, they killed Chef!”

Stan wasn’t kidding. In Wednesday’s tenth season premiere of “South Park,” the lovable Chef, who was formerly played by musician Isaac Hayes, was killed off in a rather spectacular fashion -- he fell from a burning bridge, was impaled on a tree stump and then viciously dismembered by a lion and bear.

“South Park” hedged its bets, however; it looked as though a reanimated (and seemingly evil) Chef had been created by the end of the episode. Old snippets of Hayes’ voice were used throughout Wednesday's show.

Hayes had a public falling out with “South Park” in recent weeks; he quit the show for what he called bigotry. “South Park” made fun of Scientology in a November episode, “Trapped in the Closet,” and the funk legend is a Scientologist.

The Comedy Central show’s creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, fired back that Hayes had no problem with making fun of many other religions in nine seasons of voicing Chef on “South Park.”

The “South Park” guys used a variety of snippets of Chef’s voice from past episodes in Wednesday’s outing, in which the affable cook comes back from a stint with the Super Adventure Club expressing sexual desires for children. (Thanks to the rampant splicing and melding of old audio clips, Chef statements such as “How about I meet you boys after work and we make love?” sounded very weird indeed.)

The “South Park” kids realize something is amiss and that Chef is not himself.

Eventually the kids get an explanation of Chef’s strange statements from the leader of the Super Adventure Club, who says that the club members have a theory that molesting children will make Super Adventure Club members immortal.

“The reason Chef has been saying those terrible things about us is because he’s been brainwashed by this fruity little club,” Kyle says.

During the explanation of the club’s beliefs, the words “This is what Super Adventure Club actually believes” were superimposed on the screen; it was an obvious echo of the November episode, when a long explanation of Scientology had the same line plastered all over it (more on that here.)

The kids successfully spring Chef from the Super Adventure Club’s headquarters, where he’s being held in a basement bunker, but Chef, his brainwashing kicking in, has begun walking back to the club over a rickety bridge when lightning strikes and breaks the bridge in two. He falls into the canyon below, where he dies.

Or does he?

The last image of the show is of a Darth Vader-esque version of Chef in the Super Adventure Club's lab; this Chef has a deep, menacing voice and a scary red spatula. Will Darth Chef be cooking up the kids' Salisbury steaks at South Park’s school? Hmmm.

Despite the fate that Chef suffered on “South Park,” perhaps creators Stone and Parker don’t entirely despise Hayes. It was clear that Chef never actually touched a kid, and at Chef’s memorial service, Kyle gave the following eulogy:

“A lot of us don’t agree with the choices Chef has made in the past few days. Some of us feel hurt and confused that he seemed to turn his back on us. But we can’t let the events of the last week take away the memories of how much Chef made us smile.

“I’m going to remember Chef as the jolly old guy who always broke into song. I’m going to remember Chef as the guy who gave us advice to live by.

“So you see, we shouldn’t be mad at Chef for leaving us, we should be mad at that fruity little club for scrambling his brains. And in the end, I know that somewhere out there, there’s the good part of Chef that’s still alive in us all.”

On another note, it has been hinted (rumored) that Chicago TV and Radio personality Ron Majors has been approached to do the voice of the new (Darth?) Chef...

I hate Tom Cruise now. Between his bizarre behavior, hostile and irrational rants about Scientology and psychiatry, and this Southpark plutocratic censorship bullshit, he's an utter ass. It's saddening to see how low an actor who acted so well in some of his movies can sink.

Chef hasn't headlined very many episodes recently, so maybe this isn't a bad way for the character to go out.

Although, an article I saw recently claimed that Isaac Hayes didn't actually quit, or that a Scientology handler quit without his consent, or something. It's not that clear.

I'm hardly a South Park fan and have never even seen more than a few minutes of the show, but this is just stupid. I've always thought scientology was ridiculous and at times dangerous, but now I'm starting to hate it with a passion.:upyours: I don't care if they sue my head off for saying this, either. I mean, we all know it's true.

I have this to say.

--I used to get into South Park, but not so much now. I like it some, but I am nt a huge fan now. It's a good show, but it hasn't ben the same in a while.

--Isaac Hayes is being a dick. He's been on a show where everyone - and I mean EVERYONE - was made fun of. My mother once described the show as an "equal-opportunity offender" and it pretty much fits. That's why it's a good show. I would think Isaac Hayes would be enthusiastic about lampooning Scientology, considering there are so many people who don't understand it. He should just have had fun with it.

--I don't understand Scientology. I don't know why it's insane, or if it is. One thing I read about it, and I don't know if this is true, is that it shuns psychology and psychiatry, claiming it's tied to an ancient extra-terrestrial plot to control the human mind. It sounds pretty off-the-wall, but there are people who believe crazier things and practice more oddities. After all, Isaac Hayes quitting South Park over a Scientology episode is a far cry from hundreds of thousands of Muslims demanding the execution of a cartoonist for an unfavorable portrayal of Muhammad.

Scientology is so dumb. The idea is to become "enlightened" or something of that nature. And in order to become enlightened, you must get rid of the spirits in your body, also known as thetins. To get rid of your thetins, you must pay the church of Scientology to get rid of them for you. The higher the thetin level, the closer you are to getting rid of the alien spirits. Tom Cruise and L. Ron Hubbard for example have/had thetin levels of OT9, which is the second to last step. After OT9, you get super powers because the alien spirits are gone!

Hehe, I prank call them a lot so I have to back up my facts when I do.
