So who's up for some torture? The Catholics are!

A recent poll in the US found that Catholics tend to support the use of torture more than the other groups tested. That might explain the inqisition.

Just renounce any pretence of Catholic faith and pledge loyalty to your government and its nationalist extremes.

It's not like they were saying it's a good thing for any reason. Probably they approve that only if it's the last option to save innocents that will die if something isn't done to get info. Yeah, I think that torture can be justified, but only when the person in question is withholding critical information that cannot be obtained any other way (after the info is taken, though, there should not be any torture as there is no justification for it). I think torture is wrong, period, but sometimes it's the lesser evil. There's a difference between that and supporting Bush's actions.

21% of catholics responding to the poll said torture is often justified. That's higher than any other group tested. I don't think saying torture is often justified is consistent with saying it should be used as a "last option to save innocents".

'Often justified' in what situation? Gah.

I don't know, so I'll assume they think it's often justified for petty crimes like jaywalking and shoplifting. Makes for a more interesting story that way.

It's also interesting that non-religious people were more anti-torture than Christians of all kinds. What is it about Christian morality that encourages torture?

Sure was. Nothing like the smell of frying pork rising up from a heretic's flesh as red hot iron is pressed against it.

doesn't make sense...

Total Catholic? does that mean that those results are only from the Catholic participants? the percentages add up to 102%

Secular adds up to 96%

and what about the breakdown of other Religions? and I'm sure there are others besides White...

this just looks so fishy, I'm craving sushi right now.

It´s kinda consequent, at least.
If people do this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flagellant) to themselves in order to save their souls, why not expand the redeeming?

considering its a survey based on 2006 adults (funny that this is the year, :D Couldn't think of another number). If the groups represented were pretty much equal then we are judging on what 400 catholics think. Not enough for me I'm afraid.
