This is in response to the increase in pirate attacks in the area (from two in 2004 to at least 35 in 2005.) The piracy has prevented shipments of food aid, which two million Somalis, in danger of starvation because of prolonged drought, desperately need. It's cheaper and, without the pirates, safer, to ship the food relief by ship. But the coast is long, the warships are few and the pirates determined.

That country would suck more than the vast majority of others under any regime.
Before you drag Clinton into this:
1. All the added "bonuses" to Somalia's dire straits (including warlords) are a contribution of the previous US administrations not wanting "them Reds" into the Horn of Africa (take a trip down memory lane to the Somali-Ethiopian War, and see what happened there).
2. Clinton had to withdraw after a massive outcry of Republicans who did not want their "our boys" losing their lives over starved people in a desert somewhere (Republicans are only hawks when they're in power...)

I dealt with them on NS as Australia. >.> Everyone thought I was a horrible person for killing the warlords and bombing their strongholds into dust. Though they need to be stopped...but by who?

No, it's expensive and when the civilians start dying a whole lot of squeamish people start protesting over dead people and kids with missing limbs.

Why does the world care? If we (meaning, everyone) quit shipping them aid and food, then the warlords wouldn't have things to steal. Without income, they're armies would eventually disband and the area might have a chance to settle down.

Assuming that it's easy to do that (which it's not) further questions... what do you do with the territory you have just conquered? Look at the mess in Iraq to see what I mean. And then where do you stop after that? Iran? Syria? France?

Maybe everybody should just get on with recognising Somaliland, and then help them extend their control over the rest of Somalia by ousting the warlords?

That's why the important word in that part was "help". They'll never manage it on their own, but if the UN is any sort of anything it should get of its arse and give them a hand.

That's why the important part was "they don't want to". What they want is independence. It would be like helping Chechen insurgents add Moscow to Chechnya.
