Having a bit of a tough time in RL recently, and want to get away from yhings for a few days. I live in the UK and have a budget of £500 - £750. Any suggestions?

It depends on where in the UK you are and if you want to go on your own or with a partner/friend etc.

hmm, well anywhere you can get for that money is going to be chilly at this time of year, but if presumably if you just feel like getting away from it then that doesn't won't bother you.

Personally, I would recommend Exmoor; Lynton and Lynmouth is beautiful and should be relatively quiet at this time of year.

You'll need a car to get there, though.

easy access to airports then... gatwick, heathrow, luton, southampton (the fastest growing airport in the UK... oh yeah...), so i'd say get a cheap flight and hotel deal from lastminute.com or something. go see amsterdam, or paris, madrid... somewhere different and a real nice change (rather than just somewhere in the uk)

That kind of money pays for an overseas trip over there?

I'm envious. I'd need several thousand to go overseas here.

well it depends how long you go for, but yeah. plenty of last-minute deals and things - a two day somewhere on the continent is certainly within budget *nods*

your country is kinda out in the middle of nowhere/the pacific :p

lol, from where I am I could get to France for a pound when the ferries do one of their special offers, and the budget airlines are always offering flights for peanuts. With the money he has most of Europe is open to you, and probably some of the Northern African and Middle East destinations as well.

Eugh. Tell me about it. I'm saving up to go, but it's extremely difficult. The airfares to and from Europe alone will cost at least $2000 :/

I really, really want to move to Europe...

Realistically, I think i'll have to wait several years before I see outside this country. :(

yeah, that's exactly why i really, really want to go see australia, but i just can't afford it.
also why when your lot come here or we go over there, you really have to visit for months at a time. going to paris for a long weekend stay is fine and easy, what with it being maybe an hour or two on the plane, but your neck of the woods? 20+ hour plane flights? bah...

good luck moving to holland now :(

though as a commonwealth citizen, don't you get some kind of speedy immigration procedure to the UK? (i'm hoping that as an EU citizen those new dutch immigration laws won't apply, myself)

Yeah. I have a couple of thousand saved up, but I want to go for at least a month...and even then, there's so many places I want to see (and people to meet :p) that i'm going to miss a lot.

Yep - I can stay for 2 years on a visa (and also work in that time), and that is more than enough time to have a citizenship application processed.

I'm seriously considering it once I finish university...a change of scenery would be nice.

But you don't need to to find good holiday spots, unlike the British. (Unless you are fan of Blackpool that is.) Living in Brazil I have the same problem unless I count Bolivia as a holiday destination, but as Brazil has some of the best holiday locations in the world, I am not complaining.

£500 - 750 for a few days is enough to go almost anywhere in the West of Europe provided you are not looking for luxury accomodation. Alternatively it is enough for a couple of days pampering in more upmaket establishment in the UK.

Spain/Portugal is probably a good bet if you want to escape the cold.

I do actually...I get sick of all of our apparently wonderful weather. I've never seen snow in my life. I've been around most of the country....i'd like to see someplace different.

There are loads of great holiday spots in Britain. I wouldn't put Blackpool as one of them, admittedly, but I certainly think Britain offers as much as anywhere else as a holiday destination. Not as much sun, perhaps, but who wants to spend a week just burning yourself? Go for culture, entertainment and beauty over skin cancer.

go for it dude! just beware that the cost of living is really very expensive over here - especially in the UK.

I am British and I have visited every county in England, Scotland and Wales. Yes the UK has great places to go and see, great places to visit, but this presumes that you are not wanting an unwinding, relaxing holiday, rather than a cultural experience.

Ollieland, the op wrote "Having a bit of a tough time in RL recently, and want to get away from yhings for a few days." This implied to me that they were not looking for cultural edification, but for relaxation. This being the case the UK is not the best of places for this type of holiday.

@Kanabia:- What you are looking for is variety then, rather than relaxing holidays. In which case living in Oz is a problem.

Oh well. I don't really want to live there anyway. It's not like I can't live without pot and topless beaches. :p

Yeah, that's the thing. I don't know how wages vary over there compared to what i'll earn here once I graduate ($28-35,000 a year), either...i'd like to do it for at least a couple of years, but I don't know. Australia isn't really offering me much right now, though.

I guessed you were British. :D

I'd say the UK has plenty to offer as a relaxing destination. I do agree that if he wants to 'get away from it all' then leaving the country might help with that, but at the same time being in totally unfamiliar surroundings might not be the best.

once I just told everyone that I was going out of town, and then bought a bunch of stuff at the grocery store and didn't leave my house for a week. It was great.

(if you are going to do that, you can't do anything that would let them know you were home, like check your email, or answer the phone)

£700 you could get to barbados for a week fully inclusive if you shop around on expedia/lastminute etc. If you're afte 2 wks then southern spain or italy would be good and semi-warm.

Fire an automatic firearm into the air, oh wait that's Iran.

I've noticed that the people in Jordan fire their Kalashnikovs at a 45 degree angle as oposed to straight up, I guess they have a concept of gravity.

My favorite suggestion so far! Throw in a few bottles of something high octane and you have a great idea there!;)
