What's DOS?

Since this is such a quick question, an answer will come by so quickly that this thread might as well be deleted by the mods now.

Also, in the parlance of NS Moderation, it is "Delete on Sight".

You may not state an additional acronym without defining it.

Sorry Distributed Denial of Service

Most targets nowadays have so much resources its almost impossible to take them down by attacking with a single machine

So you use a virus or a trojan or some other means to gain controll of a bunch of machines and then use all of them to attack the target

Understood

(pitch gradually rising) Now I don't see the spontaneous combustion (pitch slightly drops a bit) happening...

Hmmm... Your answer may be the Denial of Service attack posted above, and that seems to be the answer you're looking for.

In addition to "Disk Operating System" (which can be used generally or specifically), "Denial of Service", and "Delete on Sight", it could mean "Dawn of Sorrow", "Density of States", or "Department of State".

Just as a helpful hint, some sort of context may be helpful in asking the meanings of initialisms, as they often have several. For example, a search on [url=http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-query.asp?string=exact&acronym=DOS&s=r]acronymfinder.com[/url lists a total of 43 meanings for DOS.

And (because I'm feeling particularly pedantic today), DOS may or may not technically be an acronym, but an initialism instead. This depends on if its used as a single pronounceable word or as a string of letters pronounced separately. For example, When used for the operating system, DOS is usually pronounced [dos], and is thus a proper acronym. But when it's the "Department of State", it is pronounced [dee oh ess].

It also depends on which dictionary you consult. Personally I bow to the (possibly pedantic) gods of the Oxford English Dictionary, who distinguish between the two.

Usually the mods hand those out after repeated banning doesn't work. More rarely, seriously bad offences (posting tub-girl or goatse and that sort of stuff, for example)are supposed to be an automatic DOS, as I understand it.

I am wondering if it would be against the rules for me to go to the Japaica thread and tell him..

"Eat the DOS.. you loser SOB !!!! :D :D :p :D "

In past, when a geek said DOS it probably meant Disk Operating System. These days DOS probably refers to Denial of Service since we use the term OS (Operating System) and not DOS.

I think it's funny that Denial Of Service has the same acronym as an old Microsoft OS.
