Teenagers and their Emo-Rants
Damn it, these things seem to just crop up on every message board and they're always about the same thing: something bad happened today, the world is out to get me, myparents/girlfriend/buddies/dog/ect. just don't understand me, yadda yadda yadda. Most of the time they're just attention-whoring, and if you don't support your position they turn rabid on you and act like they actually know something.
Your thoughts?

I know a bunch of Emo Kids, and yes, deep down they are no more than attention whores.
I thought I was emo when I was in High School, but I recently realized I was justifiably depressed. For reasons that may or may not involve my childhood, I was under a constant cloud of dread and a generally horrible feeling. Any good feelings trying to squeeze through were forcively pounded out by feelings of self-loathing and a negative level of esteem.
Really all I needed was a girlfriend. Specifically, a girlfriend that actually cared about me. Once I had that, everything seemed to just get better on its own.
By definition, I was emo - depressed for seemingly no reason, taking it out on other people and myself, continually digging the hole deeper. In reality, however, I was just incredibly lonely and had a horrible case of low self-esteem.
I think maybe "emo" kids just make up reasons as to why they are what they are, rather than finding the real reason. "Nobody understands me!" is just a lazy answer to "Why am I angry and depressed all the time?".

By posting on a message board, you are trying to convince people to read your thoughts. You are devoting your time to getting the attention of others, thus, you are an attention whore.
I'm posting, that makes me an attention whore, and should someone respond to my comments then all three of us would be whoring it up.

The difference though is that we are having a discussion, an exchanging of ideas. Emo-rants are all about getting across your problems and every percieved injustice done against you and asking others to agree with you, give off their own percieved injustices, or help you solve your problems.

Punks were outcast and loathed by society, but turned it around to become a viable style. Geeks did it. Nerds too. The problem with Emo kids is that they aren't turning anything around. Their whole operation falls apart when they have nothing to feel sad, oppressed, or sorry for themselves about. People who define themselves by how awful they feel should just be ignored, though that of course gives them power anyway. Just hand them a razorblade and show them a picture of your girlfriend when you walk by, and with luck their own self-loathing will do the rest. The only downside is that they won't discover the body until it starts to stink, since they'll put their Fall Out Boy CD on endless repeat and lock the door.

[scathing response to revisionist history]Punk died when it "became a viable style". Similarly, the whole value of geekdom, the escape, the occasionally cult-like secret knowledge and inside jokes, was destroyed when geekdom became broadly accepted.[/whine] :p
The problem with Emo is that it is just a new way of marketing the same old culture. It's just as materialistic, just as ignorant, just as xenophobic, and just as posing as every other reinvention of the same culture.
Punk, geek, and nerd groups never will.

You know, the only thing that bothers me more than the "emo kids" (or even worse, the "emo" young adults in my age bracket) are the scene kids. At least the emos think they're standing for something, whereas the scene kids are doing it purely for the look and the percieved "attitude". Emos put their heart into it, while Scenes just kinda fwoop their hair and wear tight pants, all the while laughing and smiling and giggling over how fabulous their lives seem in comparison.
That said, though....I really hate emo kids, so scene kids are pretty much scum-suckers in my world.

It seems to me that "emo" culture is just a really really really watered down ripoff of punk and goth culture. With any trace of a spine taken out.
Their music I find mostly to be unimpressive and really not all that emotional.

Agreed. But emo seems to, at least in my eyes, make that whole "depression" thing rather something to aspire to....if you fit this image, people will accept you, but to fit this image you have to be this and this and this....and I think that's where many of the modern "emos" spring from.
I mean, depression is a serious thing, yes, but it's being tossed around like crazy these days. Get a C on your geometry quiz? God, you're so depressed. Didn't make the part you wanted in the show? Geez, your life must suck so bad. Yeah, sure, there are real depressed kids out there with real problems who need real help, but the emos are doing nothing but cheapening the grimness of their situation. That, more than anything, seems to be the root of why many people are anti-emo.

Agreed, coming from somebody else who had similar issues.
But then, I also came from the camp that protested the over-medication of America's youth, so to this day, after 6 years of attempts on the part of my doctors, I've only been somewhat medicated for 5 months, and I'm off of that now.
But then, I rock it old school. I figure, if it gets so bad that I can't take care of it myself, then I probably deserve to have somebody else tell me what's best for me.

I've never been on medication for depression, despite the fact that, looking back, it could have had some positive effect. I got through it all in one piece though, thankfully. The only medication I take on a regular basis for my allergies.

To anyone with a problem of some sort, its the main problem in the entire world. One of the things that happens with teenagers is that they are in a twilight world of "in between." They're not yet fully adults, but there are many times when adult behavior is expected of them. This generates conflicts with others as well as internal conflict.
Many of the things that happen to teenagers are new experiences, and they often have no framework into which to insert these experiences.
It's all very confusing and sometimes very troubling. I suggest you might want to take this into account before you lump them all into some derogatory category based on your own, personal frame of reference.

It is a general rule that all the annoying people in the world will be ostricized in the real world (or IRL if you prefer), and thus they will embrace the only other "world" where at the very least they can post thier feelings anonymously...even if no one gives a damn.
That having been said, I, a citizen of the Internets, call for the immediate deportation of all nuisances.

meh, it depends on the whine of course, but often it does help to talk or rant about percived problems in your life. sometimes it's better to do so anonymously to strangers on an internet forum, sometimes you don't have anyone else to talk to.
whether or not its "attention-whoring" or not is another matter: if the thread is all 'what should i do???? nobody understands me!!1 listen to meeee!!!!' then yeah, that's attention whoring. but most aren't like that.
i don't really see the problem anyway: those kinds of threads really are easy enough to ignore if you can't stand them. its not like anyone's forcing you to read them.

you can get a hint of what it's about from the tooltip thingy when you hover over the thread title, no?
you can stop reading halfway through, no? after the first sentence, after realising 'this is some emo shit', right?
