Now, kids - I don't wanna be the party pooper around here - but my parents taught me that food is not something to play with, especially not in that manner - and definitely not when the other half of the world is starving.
So, no. I don't think it's all that funny but a disgrace and clearly shows why Western societies are disliked in other parts of the world.

Actually, tomatoes are very healthy, easily processed and preserved, include lots of vitamines and minerals and could indeed help those in need of good nutrition. And if you withdrew the water and put the tomato puree in cans you could indeed feed many hungry mouths instead of fooling around with it out of pure decadence and stupidity. It's despicable, no matter what you say.

BTW, since when did "but the others do terrible things, too" (or gross stuff, or whatever) become a valid argument?

I simply object "traditions" like this. The other one is that "festival" where people do the same with oranges.

Oh...well i never liked tomatoes anyway...They can have mine!

But I disagree about the rest. i think these festivals should be held..Sure it is a waste of food and all, but its tradition and its giving recognition to their past. It would be like the US stopping BBQ's and fireworks on the 4th of July

It is a decadent waste of food indeed and those traditions are no good whatsoever. They should have fireworks and BBQ instead - I wouldn't object to that at all.
But if something is clearly stupid and you're only doing it because your forefathers were idiots as well, I can't see why traditions like that shouldn't die out.
I wonder if they'd uphold their "tradition" if they were starving. After all, it's their tradition, right?

No - I won't agree on that. Why not make it a tradition not to waste food but help those in need? That would at least make some sense!

La Tomatina was actually one of the things I managed to do during my year in Spain. It was kind of fun... but all of the tomatoes weren't ripe enough. And I didn't have goggles of any kind. Just shades. Not so much fun.

You're being disingenuous. You actually watched la tomatina because they made you wait to the end. And, of course, there was that *HUGE* benefit of the "flight attendant's segment" *drool*

I'm on to you & yer trout, buddy.

You know what, i had already known about this for several years now, and when i go abroad, i intend to arrange my tour around it.
I would invite other interested NS'rs to join me so we can pelt the living sh*t out of each other, but alas, i haven't yet saved the fundage. Also, i would prefer that the tomatoes were nearing the in-edible phase before using them for artillery. Admit it, SO many arguments here could be easily settled with that!

Bunnyducks, got to it first, but anywho, it's the Tomatina and it is indeed in Spain. I couldn't remember the proper Sapanish name (I was thinking tomatillo), so I looked it up on the Wikipedia. This is what it says:
To meet Wikipedia's quality standards, this article or section may require cleanup.
