You answered your own question: Nationalism.

The culture of areas such as India and Australia are amazingly similar to ours.

Examples?

Australia is just 100% british, except the aberiginals. (sp?)

India is more subtly british, to attempt to show this subtlety could not be done with words.

Australia is not 100% 'British' in origin- even if you discount the Aboriginal peoples.

How is India 'subtly British'? You will need to show your work. ;)

Yes australia might as well be british, the differences are so ridiculously small that you could find them between yorkshire and bristol.

India is british in its culture becauuuse.

I can understand why the larger more prosperous nations would want to claim their own nationallity, but if I were a citizen of some country on the ass end of nowhere, I could do worse than getting the protection and economic benefit of a higher power.

I'll wait for the Aussies to come on and answer this properly- but I'll simplify my response by saying this: Greeks, Vietnamese, Lebanese, Irish, Scottish all have sizable 'cultural' input into Oz.

That describes most Western democracies more or less. (And I would take it as a given there would be links considering the Britain ruled India for so long) Anything else? Anything beyond the Imperialist era that links the two?

I don't know if this is a perfect example, Britain has had heaps of immigrants aswell. Admittedly, not as many as us (and you left out the HUGE influence that China has had). Then again, we got all of our influences a long time before we carved out a separate identity for ourselves, so maybe thats the reason. I reckon we need a united Commonwealth, but under Scottish rule :D

And as far as cricket goes, you'll only find ONE sport better... Aussie Rules! And thats only better coz there arent boring fucks like Kallis.
