I chose it because I thought it went well with "The Nomadic Peoples of...".
When I made my nation I didn't think I'd ever end up on the forum, if I had, I'd have chosen more wisely. It's stupid and unwieldy and I like my puppet nation's name better, but somehow I've grown attached by now, so...

Exactly the same as the one I use in RPs. It's a benevolent, democratically elected dictatorship. The "dictator" (put in quotations because he/she isn't REALLY a dictator) has many limits on their power, and mainly just guides foriegn policy and passes laws (which can't nrgate a really strict constitution).
As for culture, they are kind of like Canada, but more conformed to my personal views. (Example: Smoking, alchohol, drugs, prostitution, and pornography are illegal.) They also hate cars, and use footpaths, conveyor belts, and bullet trains instead. If you want to know a really in-detail report, let me know.

Yeah, but it's not used so much anymore. There are many people over 40 that still bear the name, and some young people in the countryside. Otherwise, it's mostly a family name (perhaps you know the soccer player Adrian Ilie).
I was thinking about creating a 21st century Rome. I changed my mind, but the name stuck.

I'm not sure I know what you mean. Is it because Henry is rare, or because it isn't? Also, are you American?
I think that Ilie is discarded because it sounds like the name of a simpleton (Bubba is an equivalent, perhaps?). We have an avalanche of new names, which were hardly used before: Sebastian, Eric, Dominic... (some of them have a slight tradition as Catholic names).
There were other interesting trends with communism and all. For example, my communist grandfather refused to give his kids saints' names. My leftist mother didn't give me and my sister saints' names, but my conservative father insisted, and we both have a saint's second name.
Nope...but I know of Ilie Dumitrescu (sp?). Only because he played in England for a little bit...for Sheffield Wednesday I think.

Only 2 of my teachers in highschool knew my first and last name, they called me Smunkee anyway though. It said Smunkee on the attendance form.....I don't know quite how that happened, but it did.
How did you come up with that?
I am not quite sure where Smunkee came from, I honestly don't remember. I think it has something to do with Sea Monkeys though. Seriously everyone has called me this since I was quite young, I think it didn't start with my family though, since most of them call me by my middle name.
Anyway, there are still people who don't know my name, and only refer to me as Smunkee, I have like a cult following. I can be in public places and hear "SMUNKEEEEEEE!!!!!!"* and then see someone (most of the time someone I don't recognize) running to me to chat about old times (most of the time I don't remember when, what, or where they met me/knew me)
* always in the same tone from everyone, like "STELLLAAAA!!!!!" (http://www.gotwavs.com/cgi-bin/wavs.cgi?Streetcar_Named_Desire=stella.wav) from "A Streetcar Named Desire", I don't know why it's like that either, but it always is, maybe there is a personal joke I am supposed to remember but don't.....

...some of them seem to be the product of much thought, and some...do not.
Well, I remembered this site from when I was looking for games on the internet. I had wanted to create a country that is like paradise, but is moral, decent, and religious in my point-of-view. Here's the simple equation:
Religious+Best Place on Earth= Holy Paradise

well, I like it too when I don't have to deal with idiots who don't like it.
It's not short for anything, I'm not named after anyone, and I am female, the combo of those things freak people out.
My advice then- dont deal with idiots. Your name is fine. You're actually making it cuter.

I picked a random book and opened it at a random page then picked the nicest looking word.
My other nations name, Cornflake Gremlins, came about when I was high and had a very long debate about why the man in the Cornflakes advert lost his beard after eating his breakfast.
I just used the first name that came to mind, "Bolol". It started out as just some random name, and now it seems to have stuck. I'm using it for other purposes now.
Imperiux
20-03-2006, 22:01
I believe and are an imperialist. Imperius was taken, so I got dibs on Imperiux.
When I signed up to play the game, I wanted to recreate "Rome". They wouldn't let me take the name "Rome" itself, so I just stuck a "W" at the end (for "West"- hence, "Rome West") and here we go.

It's onamatopaeic, obviously.
No, I was thinking about the older one where Kirk discovers a world with a Roman society and 20th century technology. But the world you mention sounds more fun to me. :)
Which episode is that? I'm curious.
I should qualify that my nation is exactly what you wanted to create- a 21st century Roman Empire. More information can be found in my signature (under "The Complete Roman Factbook"), but essentially what I've done is transform Rome into a liberal democracy- because that's what Roman values (e.g., honour, equality and fairness) translates to today. It shouldn't be surprising that it's like the West today- after all, Rome is what gave "the West" it's proper beginnings.

Star Trek TOS #43: "Bread and Circuses"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bread_and_Circuses
My name has an odd history - it's actually derived from another nonsense word ("Taredi"). In turn, the nonsense word "Taredi" dates back to an empire name I chose once when playing Master of Orion III; I wound up winning that particular round of the game, and the name "Taredi" just stuck in my memory for some reason. I changed "Taredi" to "Taredas" because I felt that "The Federation of Taredi" just didn't sound right. (I rejected my usual Internet alias ["Tarhalindur"] for the same reason, though I may dredge up that particular name for a puppet at some point.)
Yes, I think too much about these things, I know. :p
German Nightmare
20-03-2006, 22:30
I got my nickname in 1994 when I joined the soccer team at my U.S. highschool as a foreign student. Being from Germany, everyone expected me to be good at playing soccer (little did they know - all my experience came from playing in the streets and the garages courts).
Well, anyway - my teammates started telling our opponents that they were in for a real surprise 'cause they had a German on the team and what I lacked in mad socker skills I made up in enthusiasm and readiness to make sacrifices and take one for the team.
They even put it down in my yearbook and I've been the German Nightmare ever since.
Man do I miss those good ol' times in North Carolina! (We just did a unit on U.S. highschool in the German school at which I did an internship and dug out my yearbook - good memories indeed!).
Saladador
20-03-2006, 22:31
I am American, but I wanted to come up with something that sounded "European" in a sense. I guess I always imagined my country as a peaceful little nation state in Europe, unnoticed by the rest of the world. Although now "Saladador" makes me think of chopped Romaine lettuce.

It DOES sound nice. Very feminine.
Also, as PM has stated. You replace one letter towards the beginning, and it says something very feminine.
Funny that the word is the same in Romanian.
As already stated, it's probably because they are both romance languages. Afterall, in English it is "values", in Romanian and Italian it is, "valori", in Spanish it is, "valores", and in French it is, "valeurs". They are all very similar in the scheme of things.

No no no, you don't need a mic. You think I have one? (Of course, I'm a frugal European, too, so maybe that's why :p)
All you need is pair of headphones.
You just plug them into the mic slot of your computer and then talk into the earpiece. Feels stupid but works. You don't even have to download any recording software if you don't want, just use the windows sound recorder (under start > programs > accessories > media. Or something like that, I forget). And then upload it to where we can access it (www.gimehost.com seems to work best so far).
I for one would like to hear some Italian and Romanian.

Sane Outcasts
21-03-2006, 03:48
I wanted a nation in honor of my favorite Hitchiker's Guide character, Wonko the Sane, a man that lived outside of society because he had realized they were all insane except for him (he was driven to this after seeing instructions on the back of a box of toothpicks). Not wanting to just be Wonko, I simply created a nation of those sane enough to recognize the rest of the world as unstable and called it Sane Outcasts.

Nope. Just your old normal headphones. I didn't know that either, but several people recommended it. Works great (sound is maybe a bit worse, but eh). They can't be "powered" though, if I remember correctly, i.e. no own batteries.

I tried it, but my speakers and monitor only have a microphone slot and when I went to play it back it just showed the slider moving with no sound. Then when I went to close it, it beeped really freakin loud because I turned my speakers up so high to try and hear. And now my ears hurt... Thank you for this Peech. :p

21-03-2006, 13:08
Once again, I am posting the same thing I always post in these threads. It's been well over a year since I wrote it now come to think of it..
Back in the day, (a few years ago actually) me and my best mate were N64 wh0res and one of the games we played was wcw/nwo revenge, a pro-wrestling game. One day I decided to re-name on of the made up characters. Being a southpark fan then too, I named him 'FiveassedmonkeymanVII' with the 'manVII' being added on in a spur of the moment thing. About a month later, I was discussing with this said friend what I should use for my yahoo msger ID (I just started using that again even though no one I know is ever on) and he suggested I use the fiveassed name, so I did, 'Fiveassedmonkeyman7' became my Yahoo ID. A few months later, I started playing the online game 'Planetarion' (sometime during Round 3 for people who know when that was) and stuck with the name for my planets ruler name. Using IRC became an important part of playing this game, and I was forced to shorten my name to 'Monkeyman7' for IRC. Sometime during the round, my birthday happened and some of my friends gave me an orange 'pimp' tshirt which I wore constantly. When round 4 of Planetarion started, I adjusted my ruler name slightly on the back of this tshirt to 'Fiveassedmonkeypimp7' or 'Monkeypimp' for IRC. When I started up on NS, I ran with it.

Agreeable societies
21-03-2006, 14:07
The agreeable society was the name given by a collection of goofball stoners one sunday afternoon through a haze of smoke to their common belief that this was quite possibly the greatest way to spend sunday afternoons. As such the society was formed and a rule book written.
Needless to say, within an hour or so the whole thing had been forgotten.
I coined the name as i believed it reflected exactly the make up of the group and at the time had the vague idea that if i formed the political party of my choice then this would aliteratively (if thats actually a word!) reflect the society i would be aiming to create... and then i stumbled across NS

I’m just glad my name wasn’t Bob or I would have had an even less originally named nation. When I look around at the other nation names out there I can’t help but think I was suffering from writer’s block when I named my first nation state… :)
I think my puppet, Ummagumma, was a lot more original. I wanted it to have a Pink Floyd styled name without being blatant about it, but still sounding good.
