As of yet, there is little news of how great the destruction was. It was travelling faster than cyclones usually do apparently, and became a Cat 5 just before it hit the land near the town of Innisfall.

People from the area have been phoning TV and radio stations, and apparently it was pretty bad. One lady said a palm tree smashed her house and now there were coconuts all over the place....I suppose people's priorities change a bit in stressful situations. :D

Eh...I live in South Florida...we thrive in that sort of weather.

Hint: We got hit by Katrina along with like five other hurricanes but were able to man up...unlike those pussies over in New Orleans.

You trying to say your area was devestated as bad by the other hurricanes as New Orleans was with Katrina?

My sister in law and her husband and kids are on holiday in Cairnes. She texted us to tell us she and family are ok. The kids are going crazy though and there's no power. They're in a hotel on the ground floor. Trust them to go on holiday in a category 5 cyclone. No doubt they'll need a holiday to recover from their holiday....!

It was pretty bad. But I blame New Orleans itself for alot of its problems. Our government gave them money to rebuild the dykes (hehe...dykes) and because of corruption, it never got there.

I live in a proper state where even if we get hit with hurricane after hurricane...we take care of shit...without the federal government.

Heh. New Orleans' dykes really were dykes. They let everyone in. ;)

Larry? What a wimpy name for such a destructive force.

Well, it seems like no one got seriously hurt. People know how to deal with big storms up there, I suppose. And Innisfail is actually the wettest city in Australia.

It hurt the farmers badly though. Seems like most of the countries' banana production for the year is toast. So you better stock up on bananas, they might get expensive. ;)

But people are still worrying about the water that will now come flooding down from the higher inland areas back to the coast. Some houses will probably end up underwater, and there have been warnings regarding crocs and snakes who'll probably do the trip as well.

Yeah, shit like that happens on a reasonably regular basis... admittedly this one seems to have been worse than most, but they know how to deal with it. I imagine it's pretty similar to Florida, only they don't have such nasty crocs or snakes... or coconuts:p

i live in the american midwest. I've seen the destruction first hand that a F5 tornado can do. I hope that everyone in its path was able to get to shelter.

As I understand it, about 55% of the houses in Innisfail are badly damaged.

Did you get any effects of the storm, even some wind and rain? Or are you too far away?

I'm a fair bit away (Oz is a big place...), but judging from the satellites, the rain we've had today belongs to the greater system of the storm. But the storm itself has pretty much disolved - although there is another one hovering out at sea.

So you're saying that the hurricane is not directly responsible for the coconuts in your house?

Just to make life fun, Cyclone Wati is following Cyclone Larry. Wati is a fair way off the Qld coast, but it's not helping with flooding problems there.

I have to give George Bush credit. He actually offered us aid. That was nice of him. Now I must go vomit. :p

Not quite - I believe a significant part of our banana produce comes from Western Australia, under the Ord river scheme, but I can't find any information to back that up (although I didn't try very hard :p)

I guess they were big coconuts (http://www.wimp.com/coconuts/) as well... :D

Mmm... Coconuts :fluffle:

Yeah, I knew you wouldn't have got any serious stuff, but whether you were affected at all is waht I'm wondering. Just trying to get a scale on how large this thing was.
