Will you be getting HD-DVD or BluRay?

Will you be buying one of the new disc formats to see your movies in glorious high-definition? Will you wait or will you simply not care?
Here are a couple of online articles on the shiny round things:

I'll wait till the dust settles (and then some, probably), but I just couldn't resist voting Beta. :p

Death to DMR !!!
:D :D :p :D
Do we really need a new format so soon? The DVD isn't even a decade old, so what's the rush?

I, too, will wait until the dust settles, then I'll do the opposite of whatever my friends did, because most of them are idiots.
I'll wait until they deceide which one will be the standard format and hopefully by then I'll be able to afford it.
Oh, well, I suppose I can always stick with my hand me down DVD player until the electronics become dirt cheap on either technology too.

whatever lucas releases the starwars collection on.
Since Sony's going with Blu-Ray for their PS3, I guess I'm sticking with Blu-Ray myself!

As far as I know Im gonna have to replace my tv and monitor to use either, or at least to get the best out of them. Added to that is this DRM bollox, which may force me and many others to pirate everything, even things we actually want to buy. Il probly get a blu ray drive for the computer though. if it becomes necessary. only got a dvd writer this year, and a dvd player a few weeks ago.

That's probably the best idea. Besides, it costs a lot of money to be an early adopter, and I don't have it.

Ditto. Nothing's coming out for HD-DVD for the first three weeks it's on the market, and then it will only be a couple titles. Nobody else has signed on yet. Since the PS3 is blu-ray and the system will spread pretty far, the initial advantage will go to Blu-Ray. As it will be used for games as well as movies, the production costs will also drop much quicker.
I'll get whichever one is more popular when I have the money to buy it. By then of course there'll be something far far far better. Perhaps when scientists invent magic I'll get one.

I'm echoing the PS3 thingie. I'm likely to get a PS3, which will be blu-ray. But I'm buying it to be a Playstation, not much else. I don't have an HD TV or moniter, though if I get that new Panasonic HD camera I'm going to have to get one...and I really want that camera...

I would go for the HD-DVD, it's affordable and backwards compatible with the older DVDs.
Blu-ray maybe better than HD-DVD but it's too costy and considered Sony's money grab tool.

Hmm...the backwards compatible is compelling. In fact, likely to be the tipping point for the vast majority of people.
As you can tell, I've done jack in the research department on the whole thing...

Probably around $2000 for player + HD TV for the first year. Prices should fall quickly but that will depend on whether people buy it or just wait for a format to come ahead.

Then I'll probably buy which ever is easier to pirate for :D

Blu-Ray has too many advantages. HD-DVD is pretty much just a DVD with somewhat higher capacity.
I'm going for Blu-Ray.

I don't even have an HD-tv......I don't really care about the better quality or whatever, the jump in quality from VHS to DVD was quite enough for me, so I will be happy with that for a while.
however this is coming from someone who went straight from vinyl to CD's and skipped cassettes altogether.

Vinyl to CD's? I hope that wasn't back in the 80's, when CD's were god-awful rather than just somewhat crappy (as they are now).

I did have a few 8-tracks, but yeah.......
I didn't purchase my first CD until 1992.

Ah, good then. CD's were getting better in the early 90's, but even still, they're nowhere close to records.

i don't really care as both will have evil DRM and i'll have to buy a new TV and all sorts (which i can't be bothered to waste my money on). i'd prefer HDDVD to win the format war because i don't particularly like sony, but thats just me being prudish

most of the bands I was listening to at that point still put out stuff on vinyl, so it wasn't a big deal. I mostly switched over for convinience rather than sound quality anyway (being able to skip to a specific track easier, easier to carry with me, ect.)
I only switched to DVD for similar reasons (being able to pause without those stupid lines, being able to chapter skip, not having to rewind it, takes up less bookshelf space)

For me, it's all about quality. I switched from VHS to DVD because of quality, not ease of use (though I will admit that DVD's are a lot more convenient).
And I've never bought a single music CD in my life. I finally got enough money to buy five LP's off of eBay, and I'll be buying more soon enough.
Records just go to show that newer technologies aren't always better.
