I was wondering how all the Albertans feel about the check(s) they get from the provincial government because of how ridiculously wealthy the province is. Is it realy enough money to be significant at all?

Actually, a lot of us are, yes.

We have a ridiculous surplus, healthcare basically in crisis, post-secondary education near that, and Klein decides to send every Albertan over the age of 6 a $400 rebate cheque. Albertan being defined as anybody who took up residence in the province before September 2005.

I still don't get why we reward the breeders, but aside from that, it doesn't seem like a great use of the money -- both the money returned and the logistics in implementing this program. I briefly debated sending it back, but then realized with the way the government works, it'd probably cost them more than the $400 to figure out what to do with it.

So instead, I just socked it into re-paying some debt -- yeah, that'll get the economy booming I'm sure.. what did the dip expect?

I think I remember seeing a bunch of joke checks (cheques for you Canadian types) to each province somewhere. Anyway, I'm a bit jealous of you Albertans. IIRC you were the only North American government not to be in budgetary problems last year.

Now there is something you don't here very often.

Oh and just to spark up a greater reaction from albertans... here you go.

I felt the same as Waterkeep about the cheques, as do many. The money could have been useful in so many areas. But I didn't say no to the cheque.

The worst part is that the decision of what to do with the money was based on a popularity poll of options, which of course means a majority count of those who responded to a survey.
