No, I'm not talking about the stuff you played in happily as a child. I'm talking about multi user dungeons. You see, I've been looking for something fun to do in my free time, and a friend of mine suggesting MUDing. She plays in one called Achaea, and I have another that plays in ShadowMUD. Do any of you have experience with MUDs? Are they worth the effort? Can you recommend a good one?

I'm too old. When I feel the urge to go dungeoning I just fire up some version of Moria (the Amiga one is still the best).

Look, if you've got the wrong personality type that can be a really bad idea. They might be just text but some people can lose them selves in little ascii worlds. But if you're content throwing hours into nothing, you're generally better off doing anything else, however, if you've decided to MUD mud with your friends.

There are plenty of Mud lists

http://mercator.mudhaven.com/mudlist/MudList_M.html
etc..

But nearly anyone's time is better spent doing almost anything else.

Ahh, wouldn't that get boring after awhile?

Depends on the quality of the MUD and its playerbase. Not having graphics gives the players more room for imagination - as well as forcing the creators to actually spend time on creating plots, nice text descriptions of the scenery etc. Since they use far less server resources it is also possible to really make them massive.

Eh I'm not that good at role playing, so I guess that why I like to have the graphics in there.

Think of it more as a collection of chat rooms, with objects where you can kill stuff and engage in reinforcing behaviors. I've generally found that it's the people who make a mud fun. But turns out there are people everywhere.

Yeah, even I felt sad for you when I saw that the "Oh my God, LG is gonna be all over this" title wasn't what I thought it was.
