To visit the doctor, or not...

My two-year-old managed to stab me in the ear with a thromometer this afternoon. She was playing with it (she's been sick) after we took her temperature. She was trying to put it in my ear, and I told her no, don't put it in my ear. So a minute later, being as sneaky as she could, she put it in anyway. Of course, she was trying to do it fast before I could stop her, so she put it in pretty hard, and it went in the whole way until it hit something solid in there... way in there.

It didn't bleed, it appears to be hearing normally, and I'm not dizzy or anything. It just hurts like you wouldn't believe. It's been nearly 4 hours, and it still is hurting a good bit. I figure it's just a bruise, and the doctors would look at it, and say "take tylenol, it'll get better" but, I'm not sure (of course)...

What do you think, should I go to a doctor?

I suggest you do have a doctor have a look at it. Even if it doesn't bleed, and even if you still do hear something on that ear. Just to be on the safe side, really.

Oh OUCH! Yes go to the dr! Better to be safe than sorry. I had my eardrum busted once and it felt like a knife had been stuck in the side of my head.

Seriously, if it hurts see a doctor. Personally, if I'm hurt, I wait for it to hurt for a few hours then I think about seeing a doctor.

Yeah, that's about how it felt... but it's down to a dull ache now, with just periodic stabs of pain.

I can't give you advice. I'm just a teacher. And Smunkee can't give you advice. She's just a stay-at-home mom. And Aerou can't give you advice because she's just a medical student.

Ah fuck it.

I'd get it checked out, that's for sure.

Get it checked out by a doctor or someone with commendable medical knowledge. That stab to whatever tissue it hit could lead to major badness.

Yeah, I can see me walking into a police station... "My daughter here is abusing me! She stabbed me in the ear with her digital thermometer!" If it's not a joking matter, why are we joking about it?

Yeah, usually I wait and think about it, unless I'm bleeding and it won't stop, or bleeding in a place I can't see. Usually things get better all by themselves, and the doctor's just gonna say to be careful with it and let it heal. Mmhm. I already knew that.

What can they do for a ruptured ear drum (if that's what it is) anyway? Don't they just let it heal by itself?

Hahahahaha

Only for another 11 days! Then I'm a resident....which is still technically a student......but better! :)

Get it checked out to see if there is a risk of losing any degree of hearing loss. Which is what I'm concerned about.

Remind me and I'll revise that to 'just a resident' :)

Sorry, I just found that incident with Smunkee to be incredibly offensive and overboard.

I would definately get it checked out if it's still bothering you say, tomorrow. Ear injuries can be bad shit, and lead to ear infections or fevers. (I had a ruptured eardrum from an infection several years ago- imagine the headache/ear pain on top of suddenly having most of the symptoms of the flu or a really bad head cold. Major unfun. But I could hear just fine out that ear.)

EDIT: If there is a ruptured ear drum or other inner ear injury, the doctor would probably either prescribe some kind of ear drops to prevent infection, or refer you to an ENT specialist if it's more serious.

And might I also suggest keeping your daughter away from thermometers unsupervised in the future? =)

I agree. Domestic Abuse is a serious matter.

"I was just following orders." "I didn't mean anyone to get hurt." "But (s)he's only two!"

These excuses have been used throughout history to justify the most horrible of atrocities. Save the world from this evil Damien child now! Today your ear gets stabbed. Tomorrow a cat gets mutilated. Next week...the beast shall rise, the earth plunges into the sun, and M.A.S.H. is brought back.

A perforated tympanic membrane. They'll prescribe an analgesic (which would be ibuprofen yes, but they'll also pair that with codeine normally) and make sure you haven't had any hearing loss. You're not experiencing any vertigo, so I doubt its been torn.

Put a piece of cotton in your ear to make sure (if it IS torn) no fluids or dust get in, and then go to the doctor.

I'd say YES- go have it checked out.

Its likely that if it starts killing you at 3am-which tis when thses things usually manifest themselves, you may wish you had.

Also-make sure your child knows how much it hurts- not to make them guilty, but more to hopefully prevent them from doing the same thing to themselves.

My daughter used to insert corn and peas into her nose and ears during dinner. I couldnt let her go to bed at night without checking both first.

She was scolded for "giving medical advice"..... which the things she said could have easily been found on webmd.com or any number of health websites...or magazines for that matter.

Nah, the cats were last week. Well, at least she likes them a little too much. She "tickles" them behind he ears so they purr, and then she gets very excited that they're purring. And she gives them hugs and kisses, which they are not wild about. And she herds them into rooms and locks them up, so I have to go find them and let them out. But hey, at least she tells me what she did when she's done!

And I don't know where you live, but M.A.S.H. is already back where I am on daytime TV! *shudder* My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:

Yes, she knows how much it hurt. She saw my immediate reaction, and burst into tears, and started crying "sorry sorry sorry mommy sorry..." and wouldn't stop crying for a good half hour. It didn't help the ear thing. Then when I finally got her calmed down, we talked about it and explained we don't put things in our ears.

My cousin got into putting things up his nose to show off for his baby sister, who found it very funny. Until he tried putting a corn puff up his nose, inhaled, and it expanded and got stuck, and they had to go to a doctor to get it removed. *laugh* I don't think the boy's put anything in his nose since. You want to be careful about foreign objects in orafices where they don't belong.

If it has been hurting for a prolonged period, then it would be best to go to the doctor. While it might not have completely punctured your ear drum, there is the chance that there is an abrasion which could become infected and permanently damage your ear drum.

While it might just hurt, it might be more.

oh i remember those days so well. the level of vigilance that you have to have to keep your 2 year old from doing something that stupid is well beyond human tolerance. and you CAN'T beat her for it no matter how much it hurts, she was just being a typical 2 year old and your reaction was punishment enough

when my son was just about 2 he decided he was all grown up and that he could do those thing that he always wanted to do his whole life. so he would wait until i wasnt paying attention and sneak under the dining table to play with kitchen knives.

i really dont miss those days

This is exactly the same symptoms I experienced when my eardrum was ruptured. I was prescribed a course of anti-biotics because it became infected, so it's better safe than sorry. Right now it might be hearing fine, but if left untreated and it gets infected...

One question: Do you have health insurence?

If you answer "yes" than go to the doctor. If you pay you might as well use it.
