Last night on the Rick Mercer Report ( http://www.cbc.ca/mercerreport/), during his rant, Rick Mercer talked a bit about Stephen Harper's standoffishness, but then went on to applaud him for his recent appearance in Afghanistan and his support for the troops. If you haven't seen the rant, take a look. How do you feel about Stephen Harper so far, and about this show of support in particular?

'that speech is worth a thousand speeches on Canadian soil. And because of that one visit, 2300 troops now know that the new guy has their back and the rest of us... we know that he's capable of the occasional classy move.

God I love his photo challenge ( http://rickmercer.blogspot.com/)!

It ain't nowhere near enough to offset his slimeyness. And anyway, we shouldn't be over there at all. Thoroughly unimpressed.

I guess I'm a bit disappointed that Mercer is being so...well...fair I guess. He hasn't necessarily say that he personally supports the troops, but just pointed out that going there is worth a lot more than mouthings from the safety of Canadian soil.

But yeah...Harper is definately slimey.

"I want the registry dead! Dead I say! You should be killing it now! You're not kiling it now, you're talking to me!"

Paraphrasing IMAO.

I'm not impressed with Stephen Harper's autocratic behaviour, at all. Although I personally support our efforts in Afghanistan (*waits for bricks to come flying*), Harper shouldn't be afraid to debate this in the house of commons.

I'd like to see a Prime Minister that not only has convictions, but isn't afraid to debate them in a democratic fashion.

If you've paid a closer attention to the news, you would've realized that Harper went at a REALLY bad time, in the middle of one of their biggest operations. I mean, it's just common sense to check what the troops are planning on doing before bursting into their camps expecting all o the troops to be there and welcome you.

Well come on now, if we can't expect our Prime Minister to pay attention to details, do you really think the regular Joe Canuk is going to bother?

you've got a point. How much can you expect from a guy who can't even say right out "I LOVE CANADA!"?

In all fairness, I doubt there would be a time when all the soldiers are huddled around a campfire with nothing to do. The Prime Minister was over there to praise the fact that they are out there doing something, after all. They've got a difficult job ahead of them, and our Prime Minister is recognizing that. I think he should've saved his domestic policy crap for his return trip home, but the important thing is that he's bringing the issue to the public consciousness and not hiding in his office.

That might be construed as gay.

I haven't actually seen him, I don't watch the news often. I respect Mercer's opinion, though. Good to know Harper can do something right.

Because we're making darn good targets of ourselves by messing around with other people's business.

Do you propose we remove our soldiers from everywhere in the world, since it's all other people's business, or just Afghanistan?
