This post almost explains itself. Do you find people to be more antagonistical online due to the lack of repercussions for their actions?

Yeah, I use a similar theory when I teach writing workshops--everyone sits in a circle, because it's not as easy to crack on people to their faces as it is to the back of their heads.

True, but I think there's also an element of not being able to tell when someone is joking, or being able to see that just because they're putting forward an extreme position it doesn't actually mean they support that position. When you debate with people in person there are all kinds of expressions that we pick up on that let you know where someone is joking/playing devils advocate and where they are really being an idiot.

You know, there was a study reported recently--the NY Times a couple of weeks ago, I believe--that showed that people are really bad at picking up on sarcasm online, in emails or on message boards. Surprise! It just doesn't translate well.

Good question! Sometimes, yes, people tend to carry things further than they would in real life...but then again, the reverse is also true, as you don't see physical beatings and hair pulling:). It seems to depend on the forum. I've seen one where all people do is behave like name-calling first graders. This forum tends to remain a bit more civilised. Perhaps it is the moderation...and those of us who have been here for a while have accepted that there are guidelines to behaviour. We also tend to focus almost exclusively on topics that don't necessarily get discussed as much in real life. I don't get to debate this stuff nearly as much in real life as I do here...but I behave about the same. Well, that's not true...I'm actually a bit more articulate and polite online. Not always, of course...but generally.

So, people CAN be more antagonistic online, but they don't have to be. It depends on the norms of the forum I suppose.

I'm less atagonistic online than in RL.
I type really slow, so I have time to think about what I'm saying. In RL I'll pop off something without thinking when I get hot.

You are generally the same online as you are in real life, give or take sometimes when you have to give someone the verbal equivalent of slap on the face.I find it helps me to work on my arguing skills here when you can't take someone by the collar and shake them silly.

i think it is a good thing, people have to express themselves some way, and for some it may be alot harder in the real world, so they do it online.

na, people cry and say "oh no, you flamed me" (what a horrible word by the way) whenever someone doesn't mix their words.

In life you better have thicker skin if you want to get anywhere. Oh, and face to face, you'd just accept I was right straight away

I'm sorry, I simply cannot find the benefit in people proving they are sneaky little cowards, unless of couse it makes them realize that is the total summation of their existence.

I think people are more honest online.

The Internet allows us to say what we really think, and we set aside the veneers of reason and sociability and show that we build our reason upon our beliefs and not the other way around.

Discussions are more emotional online as we are arguing what we feel not the layer of thought we throw over it.

I'm sure a good portion of the people on here are fat lazy slobs (your typical computer sloth) who probably would keep their mouths shut if they were face to face with the person they were antagonizing.

That would depend entirely upon who they were antagonizing. Computer sloths can will themselves to move with astonishing alacrity given the right set of circumstances and stimuli, y'know.

Besides, they could be attempting to antagonize schmucks like this:

And I'm hard-pressed to think of anybody better to antagonize.

Only for about 4 seconds tops. Then they are wheezing and puffing. Another thing I should add here is these are the same people that show up at cons and don't bathe for the duration of the event. They should learn what a bar of soap is all about. I've been behind some of these slovenly beasts before and the stench would knock over a water buffalo. They are easy to spot, all you have to look out for is their greasy long hair and extremely gay dragon shirt.
