Miss Deaf Texas killed by train

Witness says engineer sounded horn repeatedly before striking 18-year-old

AUSTIN - The reigning Miss Deaf Texas died Monday afternoon after being struck by a train, officials said.

Tara Rose McAvoy, 18, was walking near railroad tracks when she was struck by a Union Pacific train, authorities said. A witness told Austin television station KTBC the train sounded its horn right up until the accident occurred.

McAvoy, who had been deaf since birth, won the state title in June and represented the state “with dignity and pride,” state pageant director Laura Loeb-Hill told the Associated Press via e-mail Monday night.

Even kids who aren't deaf are told not to play on railways. She was just tempting fate, and fate was tempted this time round.

Eh mine is pretty funny in itself. It's amazing how many people I can freak out by showing them my BAHA bolt. ALso, having half of your face paraylize is fun to, mainly because you're the person that can imitate Slysester Stallone the best!

a friend of mine used to live a few blocks from the train tracks, her whole house shook even before the train was passing, it just had to be on it's way to near her house, I don't see how someone on the tracks wouldn't feel it.

Yeah, it's hard to imagine that she didn't feel it coming. Being deaf means your ears don't interpret vibrations not that you can't feel vibration.

The stupidest people all get hit by trains.

She was deaf since birth and couldn't tell a train was speeding towards her? It doesn't matter if she was deaf, it isn't like a several ton piece of machinery is barreling toward on two metal rails doesn't do anything besides make noise.

No, nothing so glamorous. Just Spina Bifida.I was just making a bad taste joke... the whole cracking you up and the weak bones you can get from osteoprosis... uh.... nevermind...

I just really know what Spina Bifida is. Especially as I've volunteered at a school that had specialist clincs on site. But I don't.... All I really know is that it involves backs and holes. However, in my defense, I was TEFLing and didn't really have a good enough grasp of the country's language to be able to converse about medical conditions.

If there IS an afterlife, you can bet she was laughing her head off for a while after it occurred. I know I would have had I been the one struck.
