I decided to give all you artists out there (and I know you're out there) a space on which to share and discuss your work.

I'll make a start here with my latest painting, entitled Lavatree:

oooh i like!
i stayed in a very nice hotel in edinburgh recently where they had similar paintings all round the restaurant - similar in that they were about the texture and changes in colour.... they weren't much into specific form or shape hehe. very nice though :)

i did this (http://www.hlj.me.uk/tree%20morph%202a.avi)today as a doodle on a whiteboard... but i guess the arty bit is the morph. bah, i can't draw. many of you will have seen my photos (here (http://www.hlj.me.uk/)). cos i can't draw or paint, photography rocks! (let the camera do all the work :D)

here's some of my favourites:

I like this one :

A bit makabre, but very emotional... it does remind me a bit of the late medieval death dance paintings, although it seems more sad than sarcastic.

Thanks. I'm fond of that one too. It's the first of an in-progress series of five such figures, inspired in part by gothic church sculptures of saints and by Buddhist art depicting ascetic Buddhas.

Ah... that would account for the way the hands are positioned, I guess? I like the idea, a lot.

What materieals did you use for that, just out of curiosity?

The figures are plaster over an armature which is then covered with a thin paper skin pasted with wheat paste. They have an interesting texture.

EDIT: The position of the hands for this figure was actually adapted from Botticelli's Birth of Venus. I tend to mix my magics a bit.

It's an Indian rice paper called Lokhta, a fine weight of that. It's strong and feels rather soft, smooth, and dry. People like to sneak touches on these figures. I think it's the look of the paper brings them in.

That's good. Reminds me of water running out of a tap. Always swirling towards freedom. I think that there is too much black in this painting though. Maybe use things like dark blue and brown in future; they tend to look better, I think the orange could be enriched by putting in some yellow and red (perhaps) alongside it. The texture is great. Got to give you credit for that.

I have to admit, it's not the best photo of the picture :D
The dark colour is actually a dark turquoise/emerald, and the orange is a metalic copper colour. I like that one for the fact that the image keeps changing with the angle of the light falling on it...

hehe i remember :)

and i did the watermarks myself by hand in corel photopaint. i select and resample the picutres anyway so its not like its much extra effort to paste in a watermark when you have the image open anyway... i've tried programs to do it automatically (and might have to go accross to using one if my dad and i can get our online e-commerce gallery open) but i just like doing it myself.

The big black "X" is an old polynesian design for a bird...represents freedom, and the ability to rise above. The under-wing branches represent the past. The red is passion, the blue is serenity. Aloha, Ohana, and Aina translate to "Love, family, earth", which are the three hawaiian values. Basicly, the three things you need to survive...the love of those who matter, your family for support, and the earth for beauty and sustinance. The little black squiggle on top is Kokopelli (http://www.homeplatesonline.com/kokopelli.jpg), a southwestern native goddess. She is a flute player, representing fertility and protection. She also appears outside of my favorite resteraunt in my families old vacation spot, which is how I discovered her. "Aita Peatea" translates to "There will be a day tomorrow as there was today"...hope for the future. The little squiggle down there is a kanji for music (http://www.kanjisite.com/images/kanji/2k/kyoku_ma.gif), which is a passion of mine.

haha...I can come up with 200 interpretations for anything. The part I leave out of being an English major is that it trains you to find meaning in everything...even if there is none.

The style, I was conflicted...I couldn't decide if I wanted it to have the straight lines and sharp points of modern tribal tattoos, or if I wanted it to be sort of cave drawing style. I ended up going with the cave drawing style because a) it kinda reminds me of something you would find in the islands, b) it looks like the old school surfer tattoo style, and c) everyone has crisp lines. How many can say they have a blob :)

It doesn't really convey the emotion as well as I would like, but I couldn't figure out how to get all the emotion I wanted into something that could be tattooed...so I substituted with interpretation

You can learn too! All you need is a pencil and paper. Just remember to draw what you see, not what you know to be there.

Which is in fact really, really difficult. One way to make it a bit easier is to draw from photos rather than real life motives. The shades and colours are there already, it doesn't move or change, and it's 2D already. I do it a lot to be honest ;)

The second secret is practice...

Well, everything you see gets interpreted by your brain. It will tell you that trees have leaves, for example. So, if you try to draw a tree, you'll try and draw the leaves. But that's not what your eyes really see. They see a more or less caothic pattern of green, no seperate leaves. To paint realistically, you have to tell your brain to shut up about the leaves and rewire so you can actually see only what your eyes see.

Hey if you have time there's a free life drawing class in the NCAD (on Thomas St.) every Monday from 16:30 to 18:30. It's up in the Print department.

There is also a free class on Fridays from 13:30 to 16:30.

Also, do you know/like the work of Marlene Dumas (http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/artists/marlene_dumas.htm)? She seems to be right up your alley.

So have Cabra and THH met up yet?

I think you two (as two of the talented NS atrists concentrated in a small area of the world) should both draw the same object/building/tree/whatever in Dublin, and post the results here, so all the NSers can judge. A draw-off of sorts.

No, in public is fine, but not i crowded places. And, yes, they do ogle. That hyacinth there was drawn in Phoenix Prak last week, and while it only took about half an hour, there were 5 people who felt like inspecting, commenting or just plain staring... ;)
