The Rhodesian SAS really should be on there, but for an organisation thats till exists the good old British SAS has to win, nobody else has been able to so much so sucessfully.

The british SAS are officially the best in the world. They have the best training, the most demanding fitness stuff, etc. However it could be argued that although one on one they win hands down, since they are few in number compared to other nations they are not the 'best'.

There truly is no way to determine "best" here. If you are going for sucsesfull operations the GIGN wins, 1 to 0. Psyche training the GSG-9 wins. The SEALs and the SAS Get my vote.

Are the Ghurkas' special forces?

In the way of Napoleon's Old Guard. Special forces here seems to mean the dedicated recon/infiltration specialists and CT units (GSG9 are a pure CT force I believe).

And, I think the SAS probably takes a lead for successful CT work (Iranian Embassy anyone?) as well as combat success in pretty much every war since WW2 (when they were formed, ironically as a Jeep mounted force due to the suicidal casualty rate of air assaults...)

Maybe they aren't as "Special" as the SAS, SEALS, etc. (as in fitness, endurance), but my vote goes to "Other", meaning, the U.S Army Rangers. :sniper:

Considering how much of what they do is classified, I really can't tell how we are supposed to determine that sort of thing.

The more we do know, the worse that makes them look.

And we all know GI Joe is the best.

Two which are not on this list come to mind for me.

1. Army Special Forces Unit One, unofficially known as "Delta" force. Puts the Navy Seals to shame. (U.S.)
2. The Metsada division of Mossad. (Israel)

My vote goes to the French Foreign Legion from my own personal experience.

Side note, the SBS are not a "sister" organisation of the SAS. The Special Airborne[B] Service is regiment within the British Army. The Special [B]Boat Service is a squadron within the Royal Marines. Don't get them confused to British soldiers or Royal Marines, as they tend to get a bit "upset".

Unfourtunatly there is a bias for the SAS because this is a british site.

Actually, I think there's a bias towards the SAS because the SAS really are the best (aside from possibly the SBS) "general purpose" special forces unit out there. The Spetznaz, back when they were the Interior Ministry's special operations group, were probably their match, but ever since they first became a "second army" and then got folded into the Red Army, they've been pretty much second rate.

Now, specialists in specific areas may be better. I'd take a Marine Force Recon platoon for pure reconnaissance; or a GSG-9 team for a psychological warfare strike. But for overall competence, the SAS are the best in the world (though you can still argue British, Australian or New Zealander...)

Hooyah.Haven't you heard that the internet has spread even as far as the Benighted States? ;)

No, mild sarcasm aside (so no nead to mention DARPA, etc), the bias will probably be towards whatever country is most represented by the users, regardless of geography (a lot of whom will have come here via the non-national "nationstates.net", even if the .uk on the end of Jolt's domain might have given any cause for concern) and time-zone, though on that latter point I expect that overnight (UK) I expect more US people will do their Patriotic Duty (TM) while we Brits are (supposed to be) sleeping.

Sorry, overlong response that, no offence meant. I personally voted SAS, probably from personal national bias/received-propoganda, but internally justfied by the fact that their training covers desert to arctic wastes, urban and wilds, 'hearts and minds' as well as pure combat efficiency.

Speznaz (sp?) and various other special forces seem to be more Rambo or Bond, Lawrence Of Arabia or Nanook Of the North, but I suspect that the 'best' Special Forces are probably not even fully understood/known by the general populous. Who knows, maybe my neighbour[1] is a secret Jamaican Special Forces operative who flies off, every night, in his jet-black jet-pack to battle the evil forces of the evil Luxemburgian Terrorism Squad that has a local presence a few roads over in the guise of the Old People's Home...

From what I understand there is so much cross training and such that all of the major western SF forces are really quite similar in training and skills.

However, the SAS most certainly do have the edge in real world experience, especially in CT work.

A few things:

1) GSG-9 is a police unit, not really a special force. The same goes for GIGN.

2) The SAS is great, but I'm not sure their training is really better than that of most other units. I know that the German KSK (created in '96, I believe) was very much modelled on them, so I would assume the training would be virtually identical.

3) The best in terms of individual skill and variety of operations would be Delta Force. They take people from regular special forces, train them even further and turn them into what essentially amounts to secret agents. So I'd say they are a level above the others.

4) North Korea has some very large special forces (largest in the world), and knowing North Korea, they would be pretty well trained. If there will be another war on the Peninsula, watch out for them. Pretty hardcore.

5) The best special forces are those you never hear about.
