Caribbean Countries

Two questions on returning from a caribbean cruise:

1. puerto rico -> what are they technically? they get gov't money and pay taxes but aren't a true territory. what gives?

2. eastern caribbean currency -> among the independant countries this seems to be growing. any thoughts? maybe more independant islands? maybe a caribbean union?

1. Comonwealth of the U.S. ; dont pay taxes to U.S.

2. Dont really thinks so.....Puerto Rico uses American currency so why get any other. Also much of the Carribean countries dont really like each other interms of their populations relations to one another. Much of the Carribean dont like Puerto Rico because of its relations with U.S., however Puerto Ricans and Cubans get along well....Trust me i know im Puerto Rican!

The nations that use a common currency (the East Carribean Dollar) do so, I believe, to avoid separate currencies collapsing. Many African nations do the same. (CFA Franc). The Euro was done for different reasons.

the common currency helps keep the economy at equilibrium for the region then.

puerto rico does pay taxes beacuse they receive gov't money back. (d.o.t, for example)

Puerto Ricans do not pay federal income taxes. They do pay federal payroll taxes. They do pay social security and several other federal taxes. They also pay local taxes.
