I HATE house and car alarms!!!

With a passion.
One in the neighbourhood has been howling for 15 minutes now, it definitely succeeded in giving me a headache.
I mean, what is the fucking point of those things? If there were burglars there, I'd probably help them to get into the house by now, if only to just turn the damn thing of!!!

It's completely pointless, the alarms keep going off for no reason whatsoever all the time anyway, so whenever there might actually be a reason, you can be certain that nobody who hears it gives a f***. They seem to be designed with the exclusive purpose to drive the entire neighbourghood nuts...

They are less high-pitched, too. No headaches...

Agreed. The do seem to annoy, but dogs can be just as bad to.

Okay that was a useless post....but this would be to if I didn't suggest:

Why not put a decibel limit on the alarms? If its higher then 90 its banned. Also maybe a timer of 5 minutes max for it. So it won't wake the hold place up and keep them up until someone shuts it off...

If I'm not mistaken, there is similar legislation here. The problem is, the alarm keeps turning off and on again...

A pirate who's scared of flying... and sailing to these shores does take a long time, the spider may die of old age first ;)

That is the horror of living in Ireland. They're forever going off in my street. Once there were 3 going off at the same time.

Also that stupid ice-cream van is blaring 'Popeye the Sailor Man'. When will the nightmare ever end?! :headbang:

the idea is to give the burgalars really bad headaches so they have to stop and go off to buy some nurofen down at boots.
by the time they come back the fuzz will be waiting for them :)
at least, thats the plan...

Last night a car alarm was going off for a solid 20 minutes, and since it was 82 outside, all the windows were wide open. And those security systems are a joke. Once, I was dogsitting for my neighbors while they were on vacation, and they forgot to turn off their burgler alarm. So when it went off it took a cop car a good 15-25 minutes to get their, which probably is enough time for your common evil-doer to accomplish their goals.

few years back we had an alarm system in our house, then one night i come home and i see its going off (parents not home because they're on holiday without me) and so i manage to finally switch the thing off, but then i wanted to sleep and got freaked out by every little noise i heard because i had no idea why the thing was going off in the first place. At the moment my 'alarmsystem' is much "better"--> neighbour who knows when we get up, when we're gone, when we get home, which area's of the house we are most often, oehh, and not to forget that she knows what we sometimes talk about... :S ... i actually prefer the alarm system... but the neighbour see's us (not living with parents anymore, but with sister and two others) as her new kids because her's moved out recently... :(

Gah, I hate that damned Popeye tune! It does not make me want to buy ice cream.

Oh and house alarms are the devil, replace them all with security cameras and dogs. Security camers will actually deter criminals and dogs can't bark while they're eating someone.

See, that's the point here. These things only make an enormous amount of noise, but none of them will ever draw the attention of a single garda... they live here as well, they know that alarms go off all the time without reason at all.

I live in NYC and down the street from me there is a store alarm that goes off randomly (and very loudly) at night. It is not connected to any type of monitoring system, so it does not bring the police, or the owner, it just goes off for 15 minutes or so several times a night. Calling the police does no good, they ask if I can SEE any disturbance, which, of course, I never can. Repeated calls to the owner during the day always gets the "No it didn't go off" response, when I KNOW it did... I was awakened by it many times and HE lives over 20 miles away.

So I printed up a sign on my computer saying "Burglers, feel free to break in here. The alarm goes off ALL THE TIME and NO ONE ever pays attention. Not the owner, not the cops. No one. You will be entirely unmolested as you break in and steal everything. As proof, every time the alarm goes off on its own, this sign will be reposted, so check back!"

I taped a copy right on the front of the store the next time the alarm went off. The following night, it went off twice, so I taped two copies up.

The store owner got the alarm fixed, and it has not gone off since.

... Just get the mailing address of the corporate headquarters for the people manufacturing these noisemakers, and send them alarms (with their sensitivity set to 'goes off in a light breeze', natch) through the mail. Tit for tat.

Someone should make a car alarm that, when activated, it locks the doors, floods red light throughout the car and plays a loop of devilish cackling. THAT would definitely get me out of the car if i were looking to steal it.

Amen! Another reason not to live in a neighborhood.

I have to agree with Cabra West on the alarms. I think a person should just have a very quiet, very agressive guard dog named "Fluffy."

If a car alarm goes off for over 20 minutes I advocate throwing a rock through one of the windows.

I doesn't do jack for the immediate problem, but the owner does tend to react more promptly the next time it goes off.;)

I dont use either myself.

There is almost no crime in my community. My house and property are fairly secure-and if you break in here, you have me to deal with anyway.
If we're not home, you'll never find the good stuff anyway, everything else is insured.

If I ever have to park my car in the city, an ice pick under the driver's seat-handle side down on the floor and business end up in the foam underside of the seat ensures the unsuspecting thief may still be in the car when I return.
A few shades paler.

I hate car alarms. these days they are so sensitive that they will go off if you walk within 2 metres of the car.
