Why does Hollywood hate Philip K Dick?

So they've butchered a number of Philip K Dick stories. Now they've cast Keanu Reeves in A Scanner Darkly. I wonder how they expect a guy with all the acting ability of a ficus plant to be able to handle playing a once-streetwise, burned out drug addict who's losing his grip on reality?

Because his last name is Dick, and they can't help but mock the poor bastard?

edit: I know I can't :D

Because he always saw the media as one more layer of the curtains hiding you from reality.

don't lose hope. Blade Runner and Minority Report turned out just fine, despite the efforts of Harrison Ford and Tom Cruise, respectively.

I thought it was an independent film

Though I can't wait to see A Scanner Darkly. At least they didn't get Stephen Gaghan to do it.

Minority Repot, fine?

Ugh, I wish there was some way to get my time back. My only consolation is that someone else paid me in.

Actually, I've been pretty happy with most of the movies based on Dick's work.

Bladerunner IS a modern classic, Minority Report not bad, Imposter was fairly impressive, Screamers a "B" movie, Paycheck something of a low for the collection.

Indeed, the only one that has REALLY disappointed, has been Total Recall.

(But then, I've not seen the earlier film based on "A Scanner Darkly" ("Drug-Taking and the Arts"?)... or the movie version of "Confessions of a Crap Artist"... so I've not seen EVERYTHING).

Personally, I have quite high hopes for "A Scanner Darkly", even WITH Keanu and Winona...

The short version of Impostor, which I saw as one of the extras on the DVD release was quite, quite faithful to the short story, as I recall. It took me by surprise, but I went into it with pretty low expectations.

My question is why does Hollywood hate us so much that they keep inflicting Keanu Reeves upon us? :(
