I have a couple questions...

This isn't really a silly thread. Though like many I make, it might degenerate into one. God, I sure hope so. ;)
Anyhoo... I have a couple questions. The first one involves a story I vaguely remember from a few years ago. It was about some rich bastard that I had no sympathy for getting an exorbitant fine for some small traffic offense in a scandinavian country. I can't remember if it was Sweden or Norway. But apparently, at the time, criminal fines were based on income. So a relatively poor person might be fined the equivalent $50 for speeding, but a rich person might be fined tens, even hundreds of thousands of dollars for the same offense. Does anybody know more about this? I find it interesting.
Second, a geography question;
The nations of Haiti and The Dominican Republic share an island in the Caribbean. Does that island have it's own name?
Thanks a bunch. :)

Hispaniola? Isn't that the island that Columbus 'discovered'?
Edit: Nevermind. That was San Salvador. Still, that name sounds familiar...

If somone was unemployed would they then recieve no punnishment. And would police not then target the "rich" as they'll top up more money for the government (thus make them more important).

While unusual, I can appreciate the wisdom in progressive fines. It prevents the rich from thinking that they can 'afford' to offend....

Simon and Garfunkle?
Nope, Simon and Gar Funkel -- The Funkel Brothers.
And in a similarly silly vein:
Lt. Drebin: Officers, take 'er and book 'er! Officer Taker, Officer Booker.
The original Police Squad TV series was too damn funny for TV, so it led to the dumbed-down movie versions. *sigh*, I love my country, but sometimes....
