Walmart cracks down on free speech.

A student who took a picture of himself giving a "thumbs down" hand gesture next to a picture of Dubya tacked to a wall with a red thumbtack through his head made the mistake of taking his film to Walmart to be processed. Walmart called the secret service who interrogated the student and the teacher who asked the student to make a poster relating to the bill of rights. So now I guess it's Walmart's job to decide what ideas one can or cannot express. Thanks Walmart. Way to look out for American values.

Walmart's the original evil empire. Sam Walton may have been a right wing religious zealot, but he a least made a more convincing stab at the image of caring for the working man. All the stuff was American made back when he ran it.

I seriously doubt some big-time corporate exec decided to call the secret service, instead it was probably some average dude running the photo machine. He probably got worried, for some reason or another and got the permission of the manager and phoned the secret service. There's no grand conspiracy here. Just normal people making a silly mistake.

I'm sure you're right, but this goes to illustrate the climate of oppressive right-wingery that pervades the Walmart institutional culture.

If you still think you have the illusion of freedom of speech, then you won't rebel against oppressors, because you don't think they actually exist.

True, but hey why differentiate between actions of an individual and actions of a corporation when one wants to demonize the latter?
For that matter, the US is evil and stupid because of Fred Phelps.
You weren't paying attention. I saw this on MSNBC when it happened. Maybe you should spend less time online and more time staring at the television.
I saw it and not even on television. I think there was even a thread about it here already, though I'm too lazy to do an advanced search. (If it wasn't here, on another forum I post on.)
But hey, people are looking for an excuse to put on tinfoil hats and claim there was a cover-up and won't be bothered either.

I'm no fan of Wal Mart, but I'm inclined to agree it's a little ridiculous to blame an entire corporation for the actions of one person, whose motives we can't possibly guess. Why not go for something that actually matters? The teacher describes the whole thing as 'silly': damn right, and it's silly for either side to try to turn this into some political statement.
Well, Wal-Mart was acting within the law so it doesn't really bother me much and isn't a particularly wrong or evil action; honestly, it just seems like some dick at Wal-Mart felt like causing some trouble and decided to turn it in and that led to this whole mess. It was probably someone playing a prank...
However, it also seems odd that the Secret Service would investigate such a thing; I hope this doesn't turn out to be BS like the Mao's Red Book story from a while ago.

Yep. Again, over zealous employees.
Though that is somewhat understandable given Wal*mart culture. I used to work for the smiley faced beast. It was kind of like being in a cult. They had huge pictures of Sam Walton plasterd all over the place and signs all over the employee areas that said "Sam says..." with all sorts of inspirational gobeldy gook. When you are first hired on you have to complete a multi media course (and pass tests) about how evil unions and the media are. They also have a weekly employee propoganda rag. And lets not forget the demeaning wal*mart cheer you are required to do every day. Some stores even mix the cheer with daily exercises. It's a very bizare enviroment that often breeds fanatisism one way or the other.

Well according to you people shouldn't egg homes of deceased military people unless they want "a considerably shortened life-span"?
COMMENTARY: This is where it always leads. This is where it lead during the "protests" during the Vietnam war. Neither I nor thousands of other veterans will tolerate this. If you know any "protestors," you can do them a great favor by telling them in no uncertain terms that this sort of behavior could easily result in a considerably shortened life-span.
Now if this was a picture of John Kerry being made fun of, you just would have laughed and given it one thumb up?
However, it wasn't Kerry, it was a picture of King George the Lesser.
