Perhaps people are finally getting the message? Maybe if people quit dying because of tobacco it will lower health care costs. Benefits everyone!

Except the tobacco companies of course. ;)

Now the big question. When cigrettes are no longer sold. All the tax money from cigrette sales is going to come from where. And don't kid yourselfs a shit ton of money comes from taxes on cigrettes.

How much goes back to tobacco farming subsidies.

Maybe now the powerful tobacco lobby will realize they are fucked and start fighting for legalization of marijuana so they can make a killing from farming and marketing it.

That's great, smoking is bad for you, but I wonder when Americans are going to get upset about all the toxins they breathe and ingest daily?

We can't have everything can we? Still, this is certainly very good news, what with all the preventable deaths tobacco causes.

less people are smoking because they are cracking down in buisnesses and citys. Believe me most smokers are very upset because they have nowhere to smoke. "having many friends who smoke in philly"

How does people not being as stupid as they used to be equate to the emergence of socialized health care?

Trust me. If there's one thing politicians are good at its figuring out how to get tax money. :D

Smoking is down because it is now cheaper to buy a six pack or lease a car than to buy a pack of smokes. Cigarette taxes are so high, I switched to pot just to save money.

And tobacco smokers are the new "oppressed minority". What is the current law? You can only smoke inside your own house in your room on your bed under the sheets with a fumigation tent over the house and all neighbors equipped with gas masks bought by you?

Here is the key phrase:

Using data the federal government gathers when it collects taxes on cigarette sales, the group found a 4.2 percent decline in 2005 alone and an overall drop of more than 20 percent since tobacco companies reached a legal settlement with the states in 1998.

While the data suggests a drop, I doubt it is as much a decline in smoking so much as it is a rise in illicit cigarette sales.

Don't think that it is. Just a possible way politicians could replace the money lost on taxes on tobacco. Not that I care about lost money, the lower death rate and then lower health care costs would offset the troubles of the poor tobacco farmers.

Right. And then when people complain that pot is unhealthy we should crack down on sale of that...

But of course then we legalise crack cocain and tax problem solved
