Canada 8, US 6

That's the final score of the baseball game today.
I found it absolutely hysterical.
There was ONE name on the Canadian team that I recognized from the big leagues, whereas the US team was almost entirely made up of allstars.
A bunch of A, AA, and AAA players beat some of the best in the big leagues...
And it was my country doing it to the US...
That just made the victory all the sweeter. :)

Fantastic game for our Canadian squad. Adam Sterm in particular with the inside-the-park home run.

If Canada doesn't win, I want Cuba to win. :) They're baseball maniacs down there.

I got to play a couple of games with them when I was down there. We did cuban/carribean students vs. canadian/european students. They beat us soundly, 13-4.

Yeah congrats you canuck bastards:mad:. No, seriously though good game. Btw Canada has a few good players; M. Stairs, J.Bay, C. Kosie, J. Mourneau and E. Berrenard? are the ones I can remember right now. So they have more than one MLB guys.

So are the Dominicans, but none of the Cubans in the MLB can play on the Cuban team. It's a shame.

Hehe. Only one I know is Koskie, because I knew him as a Twin, and as a Blue Jay. The other names I haven't heard.
But I knew almost everyone on the US team. I had predicted the US was going to win, and told my dad it looked like an allstar break game looking at the American team, but I held out hope for our Canucks!
Go Canada Go! ;)
Odds are, the US will still win another game and go on to the next round anyway, so the victory/loss doesn't mean much... it just makes certain that Canada's going on. :)
Now, if the US loses to South Africa, I might die of laughter. ;)

They might not make it out anyway, you know. I think that if more than two teasm are tied for the best record, it comes down to number of runs scored, as I recall. But South Africa won't be a total picnic either.

Thank god the rest of the world doesn't play our version of football. At least there's a sport out there that the USA can still pretend like we're the best in the world at. Once upon a time no one could touch the USA in basketball and baseball, but that has all passed us by.

Our sports sold their souls for the casual consumer. Baseball and basketball are all about dramatics and do not deal with the fundamentals.

And interestingly enough football has gotten away from that and has gone towards a more team-oriented dynamic.

Yep. Look at ARod. It's not about the team anymore, it's about getting the "Hero" who will win the game for you.
Well, ARod didn't win today! I love it when the highest paid players in baseball show that they can't always win, no matter how much money you throw at them. ;)

Yeah, they shouldnt sleep on the South Africans, they played Canada pretty well and they surprise some people. Im thinking Venezuela is gonna win it all. The US is a lot like their basketball team they had for the olympics, alot of big names but they dont know how to play together.

Exactly, the way they have bargained with the players union and kept a team-oriented marketing scheme has made them the only really strong sport going.
Salaries mean that every team has a chance every few years, combine that with the marketing of teams and not players, and you have huge fan loyalty.
Baseball has gotten to the point where people are only loyal to the spectacle, its like a circus, just show up if you have an afternoon off.

Well, except for the part where the NFL and the players association were unable to come to an agreement and there won't be a cap this upcoming season....

The Yankees aren't that bad, they at least try to build winning teams. The worst is the Mets, they're entire strategy the last few years has been to sign big names to put people in the seats.

Yeah, I'm fundamentally opposed to the Yankees for a couple reasons...
1) I'm a Blue Jays fan, and they're in the same division
2) They have a city with the population of all of Canada, so of course they can throw enough money around to buy every all star they want to make a team of heroes that can trash everyone. I wish there were salary caps in baseball to put everyone on an even playing field.

How are the Mets worse than the Yankees in trying to buy the big names? The Mets are trying to create a winning team as well, which is why they haven't sold out their future. They are trying to build a long term, winning team through their farm system (David Wright, Jose Reyes, Lastings Millege), as well as spending their money smartly (the mets payroll has not grown that much over the past two years and still remain around half of the Yankees payroll).

Top earning Mets:
1. Carlos Beltran 11,571,429
2. Pedro Martinez 10,875,000
3. Tom Glavine 10,765,608
4. Billy Wagner 9,000,000
5. Kazuo Matsui 7,058,333
6. Steve Trachsel 6,782,500
7. Cliff Floyd 6,500,000
8. Paul Lo Duca 4,600,993
9. Carlos Delgado 4,000,000
10. Jose Valentin 3,500,000
11. Jorge Julio 2,500,000
12. Victor Zambrano 2,100,000
13. Chad Bradford 1,400,000
14. Julio Franco 1,000,000
15. Chris Woodward 700,000
How many of those players came up through the Mets' organization? How many were on their team two years ago?
There is not a single Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, or Jorge Posada. The Yankees have team icons, the Mets have nothing.
