1. Is it only contagious when you show the symptoms (sores)?

2. Is it true that HSV1 and HSV2 are the same virus and it is easily transeferable through oral sex? than HSV and HSV2 are just designated names for the same virus above and below the waist

I wouln't know. Check Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) or some manner of medical site.

Oh, and keep it in your pants/keep your knickers on, just in case.

as far as I know...

1. It is more contageous when there is a sore, but is possibly contageous when none are present.

2. That sounds right.

No. They are different strains. HSV1 is much less virulent than HSV2. They can both be transmitted to any fleshy, moist skin. There is a common misunderstanding about Herpes. You commonly hear that 70% of the adult population has herpes. This is not true. 70% of the adult population test positive to the antibodies of herpes. This means that they've been exposed, not that they have it or can pass it on. I am one of those. I had a herpes test come backwith a negative and a positive(they always test twice). I was all freaked out until I asked the doctor what it meant. She told me that it simply meant that at some point I was exposed, but that if I have never had an outbreak that I did not have herpes and could not transmit it. There is no such thing as a "carrier" for herpes. If you get outbreaks, you have herpes and can pass it on. If you do not get outbreaks then you do not have herpes and you cannot pass it on. Also, she told me that when it comes to herpes blood tests are next to worthless.

Ahem, I am a scientist, perhaps I can help....

I work with herpes, HSVI (oral) and HSVII (gential).

The terms oral and genital are general, as both strains can affect either area. However, they have a marked preference for a specific area. Oddly, oral herpes is the predominant form affecting the genitals in Japan and the north of England. Interpret this as you will.

A HSVII infection of the genitals is generally the worst form, however cases of HSV causing fatalities are very rare and associated solely with a HSVI oral infection.
