Election 2006: The Season Begins!

Time to break out the shotguns and camo cuz it's politician season once again.

The primaries began this morning in Texas, officially opening the 2006 mid-term election season. With the entire House up for re-election and much of the Senate (I'll have to look it up as to exactly who in the Senate is up), not to mention various gubernatorial elections and local things, it's time to dust off the old voter reg card.

So what's up in your area? Got any predictions on the national front?

As for Texas, there are a couple of interesting things:

1] Tom Delay is in big trouble. The Republicans have put up someone against him in the primaries. I don't think Delay will make it past today unless he goes Independent.

2] At midnight tonight, the official Kinky Friedman signature gathering festivities begin. I am forgoing my vote in the primaries in order to sign Kinky's petition to get him on the ballot as governor of Texas. (see link in sig for info if you're Texan and are not voting in the primaries)

Remember, folks: there's more to voting than just President. Mid-term elections are just as important! Get out there and vote or sign the petitions of the independents you want to see elected. There's a lot riding on this election and it could set up the government for the next 6 years.

VOTE!

Cynical minds would say, "why it doesnt matter what I think, Im not in charge. And the people in charge are no different form each other, what they do doesnt effect me and even if it does, I cant change it." your rebuttal.

Fortunately, this is where it does matter. This is where the governors and mayors and local/state legislative bodies get elected. This is not some multi-million person vote, but in many cases whether or not someone gets elected is the difference of 20 votes.

I've always said to people: If you don't want them at the top, don't vote them in at the bottom.

Well, there's no serious challenge the the blueness of my state this year.

The reds have an opponent for Maria Cantwell, but it's highly doubful that she's in any danger. There's no one running against her in her primary, though I'd really like there to be one, Cantwell isn't exactly the "democrat" I'd prefer to have representing my state.

My congressman is someone I like, and he'll be campaigning on my little island this time around because archepeligo I live on just voted for seperation from the mainland county we had been attached to.

As for the rest of the country, I think we're going to see something of a replay of 1993, only in reverse. :D

I take comfort that our election period is in 2006 as well, meaning that the news will be inundated with domestic politics. :)

Republicans have a solid lock in my district. I don't see the point of going to vote against them. Waste of time.

Thanks to the school finance debacle, there might be a high turnover rate in the state government. Which would be sweet.

So what's up in your area? Got any predictions on the national front?

I've not got any good challengers to the incumbents of my district for the state, so I see no reason for them to be tossed out or go against them heavily. And there is no way my Congressional Representatve can lose. Jeb Hensarling isn't doing anything really horrible, and he's actually someone trying to corrall the dumbasses wanting to spend money they don't have.

I may not be all that conservative, but there's no way in hell I condone spending money you don't have. That's just stupid.

I'd like to see it before I'm gonna believe it.

Indeed.

I believe that we in California have Feinstein up for reelection.

I hope we replace her with someone who makes as much noise as Boxer, but is still a democrat.

OMG! Those idiots let Tom Delay win the primary.

What the fuck is wrong with Sugarland?!

Do Republicans just like having criminals represent them? Yeesh!

Who knows anymore? And I could've sworn seeing numbers that showed the majority of the populace (or at least a good number) of the Republicans of that district not too happy with him over this mess.

What was the percentages anyway? I didn't see.

Oh come on... elections in the US (especially Texas) are just populist shams, nothing else! Everyone knows that. It's not as it's going to change anything...

Here in Michigan our Governor Granholm (D) is up for reelection in what promises to be the most expensive and hardest fought governor's race in the state's history. I'm glad I don't watch TV because I hear that Dick DeVos (R) has already started running TV ads.

Time for more binary politics and binary political minds, where it is less important to have a good leader win than to have your brand of leader win. The canidate may be a SOB, but by God(/Marx) he's our SOB.

I see the deep political thinkers are out in force this year.

My district the incumbents will win, easily. And the Govenor will win because the opposition party is split.

Nationally; reactionaries will do well this year look for wide spread apathy by moderates, and low voter turnout amoungst conservatives.

In my district in Texas we ousted the incumbent state representative, simply because he happened to chair the education committee during the school funding disaster.

Not that surprising about Delay.
