Let's secede!!!

This is my rant for the day:

We should've just let the south go without a fight when those states seceded. They've caused far more trouble than they're worth. In fact, I'd like to see the Northeast and the Pacific States secede right now. Fuck the south. What have they done for us? Caused all kinds of unnecessary problems, that's what. They complain about how the federal government takes their taxes, yet the southern, or "red" states in general take in more money than they put out to the federal government. Fuck them. And then our politicians have to play to the conservative southern vote, and in the end we get stuck with some hypocrite Christian fucktard who doesn't know what the hell he's doing. If the blue states seceded, we would be the greatest country in the world. We would have all kinds of progressive institutions, like free healthcare, progressive taxes...well, I'm running out of steam.

Umm.... actually I would consider the southern states a relatively good part of our union. Heck Texas has the 3rd largest economy of any state and would probably be ranked around 10th largest economy in the world. Certainly the south is not the best area to some extent but if we did not retake the south then the Europeans would have used the south's dependence on foreign goods to get it to destroy us and this would leave the United States much much weaker. Europe would have exerted much more imperialistic power over the world if it weren't for us fighting the Civil War.

Please take Illinois with you. The country side is full of hicks, but Chicago makes up for it. I live in the country myself, and hate being in big cities in general, just to let you know. Don't want anyone saying I hate country people, since I don't.

Secede, oh great idea... that makes a whole bunch of sense.

I hate it when people make poorly thought-out statements like this because it shows that they haven't taken the time to seek the information they need to make an educated decision.... go to the south, talk to the people, you'll find that they're... yep, people, just like you.

They're not bigots, they want the same thing as you... and prejudging them leads you down the path that so many have followed to hatred fueled wars..

I'm not from the south by the way...

They say that "Good fences make good neighbors." Had the South seceded, there would have been a lot of hostility between the Union and Confederacy for about...oh, a couple of generations, but give it to World Wars I and II and I would put good money that says that the two nations would become allies. THey would certainly have their differences...the South would have freed the slaves when they damn well felt like it, and maybe they would have gotten along with black folks a lot better...the Civil Rights movement would have gone down completely differently. There might have been more of a focus on immigrants and labor unions, and frankly, there might have been more help for gay folks as well in the North. The Civil Rights movement might have been for everyone...blacks, gays, immigrants, you name it. I don't know how that would have played out in the South.

I've seen several articles about this issue pop up lately. Most of them point out how the south has held back the rest of the nation politically and socially. To a degree I would agree with that. But actually splitting the nation at this stage in the game would be rather difficult I think. Would it be like the partition of India with forced migrations of people?

Here is one of the better articles on the issue from Slate.

http://www.slate.com/id/102291

"Economically and socially, secession will be painless for the North. The South is a gangrenous limb that should have been lopped off decades ago. More people live below the poverty line in the old Confederacy than in the Northeast and Midwest combined. You are three times more likely to be murdered in parts of Dixie than anywhere in New England, despite a feverish devotion to "law-and-order" that has made eight Southern states home to 90 percent of all recent U.S. executions. The South has the highest infant-mortality rate and the highest incidences of sexually transmitted diseases, while it lags behind the rest of the country in terms of test scores and opportunities for women. The Confederate states rail against the tyranny of big government, yet they are the largest recipients of federal tax dollars. They steal business away from the North the same way that developing countries worldwide have always attracted foreign direct investment: through low wages and anti-union laws. The flow of guns into America's Northern cities stems largely from Southern states. The tobacco grown by ol' Dixie kills nearly a half-million Americans each year."

I wholeheartedly agree. Instead of fighting to preserve slavery, the South was fighting for the right to decide slavery for their own. It is an undisputable fact that the Northern and Southern sections of the country have always been different; politically, religiously, economically, and socially. The intrests of the North were widely different from those of the South, and just as they thought slavery was an abomination and should be forcefully abolished, the South believed slavery was essential and necessary to survival and emancipation should come slowly and in due time, that time being when the South decided it was time. The North had no right to dictate what was "right" for an entire 1/3 of the country.

Hah? That Slate Libertarian Crap? It makes me sick...

Heavier gun Control Laws = Undefended Civilians and Armed Robbers. Trust me, Criminals WILL get guns, no matter how heavy the laws. And if you take away guns from the average Civilians, you will have A chronic increase in Crime.

As For The Discrimination... I can Discriminate, I don't do It A lot, but A gay person is not welcome in my home, heck, the most common insult in my school is 'gay'.

"Chad you Gay Queer! Get off of me!"

Good Days... Good Days...

Personally, If A seccesion happened, I would definately leave both of them. North has the above, and the South is a dump. Slash Mexico. And Candada. As For English Majority Speaking countries, that leaves UK, and the UK has the Gun laws, and Australia maybe, and Naturally, as a part of the Commonwealth has extreme Gun Laws... But Less than the UK. I think I would move to Australia.

Why should the south seceed from the union? The money is moving south. The north will mostly be on welfare soon. The cities will be rat infested............hmmmmm???? Maybe time is near....

All of the real leaders come from the south......Ted Kennedy(woops)....George Bush(I thought the Bush clan owned most of New England..GW can't even fake a good southern drawl) Rockefellars(sic) in West Virginia.....What is this world comming to.

Damn carpet-baggers..............

No need to break up the union...........We will eventually add 2 more states...Mexico and Canada......Might make this thing worth something yet.

In the north, it was as much of an economic issue as it was for the South. Northerners saw slave labor as too difficult to compete with, since they had to pay factory workers and such to do the work that Southern slave owners could get for free. So really, on one side, Northern corporate bigwigs wanted to abolish slavery, and moral and religious reasons were helpful as far as gaining support. On the other side, Southern slave owners wanted to maintain slavery, and the idea that blacks belonged on plantations also helped. This wasn't a case of the North dictating morality for the South, although many who were in less power saw it as a moral crusade. This was largely a case of the North wanting to stop slave labor in order to make it easier to compete with the South economically.

I figured I'd regret clicking on this thread, and I was right. Lots of ignorance and no substance getting tossed around here.

Right after the 2004 election, when I was feeling pretty pissed off, I bought into the "United States of Canada" and "Jeebusland" for about five minutes. Then I realized something--while I was living in the USoC at the time, I was going to be moving to Jeebusland in a few months (and I'm there now), and I sure didn't like the idea of being abandoned to my fate, especially since I'm living in a particularly progressive segment of Jeebusland.

I'd like to think that this thread is just a big joke, and if it is, then please excuse my earnestness on this, but the idea that secession would do a goddamn thing for the better really irks me.

Pure and utter BS.

You are so wooried that Mexicans want to get into America that you want to build a wall to keep them out. There is no way that you would force them in. Second, Canadians hate the US so much (for no perticular reason either), that there would be alot of violence for the US to deal with if America claimed ownership of Canada.

Plus you are neglecting smaller details like, you need to sew Canadian flags onto your backpacks if you want to travel through Europe unharmed, or the fact you need a country were you can send you college students to get hammered and not have to clean up the mess.

I don't know how that would have played out in the South. There would have been a war eventually, probably bloodier than what did happen. The two nations would have competed for trade and territory at the very least, but the social issue of slavery and civil rights would have probably been the straw that broke the camels back. You forget that there wasn't really a need for a civil rights movement outside of the south. Inner turmoil in the south (which they probably would blame on northern 'instigators') and indignation in the north would inevitably lead to bloodshed. Better it happened when it did, before automatic weapons, chemical warfare and other advances in the art of death.

And Holyawesomeness, fuck Texas. You guys won't be missed. I still think we should give it back to Mexico.

California on the other hand is the prize. 5th largest economy in the world and producer of about equal to a quarter of what this country eats. Hell, we could be a country on our own and still be a major player.

Hmmm... that's not a bad idea ...

If the library in your "school" has saved any sociology texts from the PTA's last book-burn, you can look up the positive correlation between homophobia and latent homosexuality.

i'll second at least 2/3rds of that!

northern california in combination with washington and oregon, could get along just fine without the rest of the u.s. if anything the rest of the u.s. could come crawling to us and probably would.

alaska should be part of canada and hawaii and porta rico indipendent nations and all of samoa should belong to the samoans.

although if canada wanted to give us b.c. and yukon, we could incorporate alaska as well.

and christerism would NOT be our 'state religeon'. it's a toss up whether we'd go with socialized potlatching or stay with monetary economics, but either way we wouldn't be as fanaticaly corrupt and corruptly fanatical about either one as is the current u.s.
