Grad Student Charged In Ohio University Bomb Scare
Sticker Is Name Of Punk Rock Band

UPDATED: 12:19 pm EST March 3, 2006

ATHENS, Ohio -- A 28-year-old graduate student from Michigan was charged with inducing panic after Thursday's bomb scare at Ohio University.

University police said Patrick Hanlin of Three Rivers, Mich., was the owner of a bicycle that had a sticker on it saying, "this bike is a pipe bomb."

After police discovered the bike chained in front of an on-campus restaurant, they shut down four university buildings, blocked off streets and called in the Columbus fire department bomb squad. It determined the bike was safe.

The university said it found out later that "this bike is a pipe bomb" is the name of a punk rock band.

Hanlin is due to appear in court March 13 on the misdemeanor charge.

Lol I don't know what to make of this ... I mean people are paranoid (and with to an extent good reason) But personally the kid should not be charged with anything

If he was smart he should avoid such things in the future ... but this was not really meant as a threat and probably done in ignorant to the consequences

Right, did the police/citizen see the sticker and call or did he promote it himself? If he didnt promote it, he is not the one to blame. At most he should be made to remove it...

Bike Sparks Scare At Ohio University
Buildings Reopen On Campus

POSTED: 9:31 am EST March 2, 2006

ATHENS, Ohio -- Authorities in Athens said that they were investigating a mountain bike that put the Ohio University campus on high alert Thursday morning.

Athens Acting Fire Chief Ken Gilbraith said that the bike had a sticker on it that said, "This bike is a pipe bomb." He said the university police discovered it overnight, parked outside a campus restaurant.

OU closed four buildings, police blocked streets around the Oasis restaurant, the fire department brought in off-duty firefighters, and the Columbus fire department's bomb squad was called in.

Gilbraith said the bomb experts attacked the bike with a high-pressure spray of water, then pried it open with a hydraulic tool and found no bomb inside.

It was later discovered that the sticker was advertising for a Florida-based band called This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb.

The university remained in session throughout the incident. The four buildings were reopened by 9 a.m.

They ruined his bike. How lame is that. You know they won't reimburse him. I mean I guess I can see the reasoning behind it but that has to be a rather stupid cop.

"This Band is a Terrorist Threat" would be a great name for a band. I think I'm going to start a band now.
