Sure, you can argue whether the atom bomb was more than needed to win the war(though it worked). But other than this, there is really little to nothing you can fault him for. He has one controversy, that is really only a controversy in hindsight, and for the rest, he did his job as he was supposed to.

Lincoln himself said that freeing the slaves was a means to an end, (not in those words)

It was Lincoln's duty to try to keep the Union together. Do you know how many more people would have looked upon his presidency as being the worst as he had let the South secede? Only people like you wouldn't mind. BTW, during the American Revolution (1775-1781), slavery was still legal in Britain. Slavery wasn't abolished until 1833 in Britain. It's not like the colonies were fighting to keep slavery because the British wouldn't let them.
