'Sportsmanship' in the modern game

After watching the highlights of West Brom vs. Chelsea english premier league football match, I was appalled by both Arjen Robben's blatently mistimed tackle and the diving antics of Didier Drogba. West Brom did not do themselves any favours either with a bad tackle from Ronnie Wallwork.

It's not just the fact that the game was filthy, but the manner it was played in with Chelsea delaying coming out after half time to players surrounding the referee trying to influence the decisions he was making. It was appaling.

Now here is the question, do you think that in football (or any other sport for that matter) that 'sportsmanship' is slowly being eroded away?

It seems to me that it is especially bad in football. Cricket is a more interesting topic when it comes to sportsmanship

Very true, hell in Rugby they have to call the referee 'Sir'...

Imagine trying to introduce that to football...

I was just wondering if you get that in American football, baseball, ice hockey etc...

American Football is actually still pretty sportsmanship oriented, but it certainly isnt perfect, and it's coming at the expense of some of the most enjoyable moments in the game (the spiking of the ball in the face of the defensive player who just couldn't catch you :D )

Yeah. They even criminalized the late hit!

Sounds very nice...:D

Still I suppose if you dived liked Drogba did today (he basically clipped a guys knee and crumbled to the floor like he had been shot), you wouldn't last long in AF.

Damn. The knees are a bad place to get hit. I think all sports around the world can agree to that one.

Yeah, but he kicked the other guy on the knee and went down like a sack of potatoes. The guy who he kicked just got on with the game like nothing had happened!

Lome Faatau(SP) threw an opponents boot away this morning in the Super 14- that isn't very sportsmanlike.
