Call me stupid, but what's with the RPs?

I don't quite get it. I was looking at Euroslavia's guides and everything to the RPs, and a few of the threads, and I was wondering: what's the point? Does anything that happen in an RP scenario affect your nation? Is there a database of each nation's economies or military power, or will that sort of stuff be in NS II? What are the basics to RPing? Thank you in advance.
The important part of RPing is what people create with their imaginations (IMO). Like creating a history for your nation, giving your leader a name and personality. And of course, when you RP, it updates the story, in a kind of multiple author way.
That said, the war RPers do seem to get into numbers a lot, which is the kind of thing I'd want a computer to do for me.
And of course you get the noobs who have neither imagination, nor a mathematical system and just post "u r gay lol I send 1000000 nukes!!1"
No. Nothing that happens in an RP scenario actually affects your nation in the gameplaying sense. We do it to kill time, have fun, and make up really 1337 weapons, systems, and suchlike. The same reason why some people play video games or debate on NS.

I'm a writer and an actress, so making up things is my greatest source of enjoyment. But, for the life of me, I don't understand massive RP scenarios. On that note, I also don't understand fanfics.

Yeah, I figured that was the main resoning behind it.

Hmmm, so do you keep track of like how much money your government has and stuff like that? Or if there's a really nice weapon you want to buy for like $4 gazillion you can?

RP is done for the sake of creativity. Consider it like a bunch of people getting together to write a book.

Remember when you were seven.
That is the point of RPs.
Playing make believe.
What a joy that can be, no controllers, no limits but your imagination---all games should be so advanced.

We use GDP calculators like this one (http://nseconomy.thirdgeek.com/). (Warning: people who reside in regions of over about 150 will be unable to view their nations and should use this (http://nstracker.retrogade.com/) instead.)

The best RPs could easily be re-labelled as 'collaborative fiction'.

Or if there's a really nice weapon you want to buy for like $4 gazillion you can? That sort of thing is frowned upon. Nobody will want to RP with you if your decisions aren't rational and realistic withing the framework of that particular RP, or with you nation's established character. I think the term for inventing infinity weapons/nukes/money for yourself is "godmodding" and it isn't allowed.

RPing is about creativity but you must pragmatic and realistic too.
Do what's feastable for you nation but don't piss off other RPers with "godmodding".

All helpful advice, thanks. Now I understand the RP world a little bit more. :)

Likewise. Thanks for making the thread. :) Maybe I'll partake in the RP sections a bit from time to time.

Read a few RP threads and you'll also get an idea what is going on. Here is post I'm kinda proud of Norleans' Families (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=10490833&postcount=1507). I've been working on my nations' government for a long time, I've fought wars, engaged in conspiracies, espionage, etc. If I were to collect together all the posts that involved Norleans from the RP threads over the past, almost 2 years, I probably could write a novella, if not a full blown novel, on the imaginary country of Norleans. I know who all the characters are and what they do and what has happened to them. The suggestion that RP'ing is like writing a collective novel is actually a pretty good one. It is all about using your imagination to create a world and the people that inhabit that world and letting others imagination things about your nation and it's people as well and each of you incorporating ideas obtained in this way. The only thing that is asked is that there be some slight acknowledgement of reality as you do so (for example, a nation with a population of 20 million could not afford to have a Navy with 2,000 fully equipped and manned aircraft carriers., etc.)

A group of 5 or so people collectivelly creating one story is quite an accomplishment. A better question would be "what's with General?"

General.. Well, it's a whole bunch of people discussing and debating a range of issues. Yea, that sums it up I think (ignoring all the shit).

I read a really good RP once. It was a story of an ethnic cleansing in a Swedsih-speaking country . It was really well written. Other nations couldn't stand it, so they invaded. There were some really nice helifights, and a lot of generally good writing. Nothing ever reached that level again. Anyone happen to have a link to the thread? It's way old, so I wouln't think so...

Interesting. Using my original nation, (not this forum board one)it shows I would have a defense budget of arount 4 trillion. Is that good? I remember back in the pre-jolt days when I was told I would have no military because of my libertarian nation with no income tax. That's why I never bothered with the RP boards.
