Should we protest the Westboro Baptist Church?

Ok, the Westboro Baptist church in Topeka, KS has been protesting at the funeral of American soldiers who are killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. They also hate "fags," and Christian groups that do not agree with their "theology." So my question is should we protest them?
Get a big band, a lot of motorcycle types with noisy bikes, a bunch of Vets, a lot of gays and lesbians, and anyone else that Westboro hates and have a big and loud demonstration around their church while their Sunday services are going on. How does that sound?

That's not how you do it. You stage a protest accusing them of being homosexuals in denial. :p

Think we need to check to see if the bars in Topeka are open on Sunday. If not I guess we will have to do it for "Wednesday night prayer meeting." :D

No. That only serves to legitimize them. Let them have their little inbred services in their little church, and ignore them when they do anything else.

You are about 15 years late with that idea. First it was religious people that protested them as their target were the Baptist churches that would not let them be a part of their denomination. When that stopped getting them attention, they moved on to public employees that were not democrats. When that didn't make headlines anymore they moved on to Gays and Lesbians. When that started to peter out the started dancing on their graves which got them a few more headlines for awhile. Now they do it to fallen soliders because that gets them headlines. They are publicity whores who make their living filing friviolous lawsuits and skimming money off their various special interest scams. The best tool against them is to deny them the publicity they seek or to eliminate them from existence entirely, which our society is no longer strong enough to do.
Giving attention whores attention is not the way to deal with them.

I'd send in evangelist protestors to turn their church around, if their so busy hating on gay people, do they actually have a plan to evangelize to people? Because you know, protesting the death of Americans from the army because you have this weird idea that they fought and died just to maintain homosexuality in America really is not good for saving people's souls.

Why protest? How about locking them in that church and setting fire to it? Let thme get used to the fire they will face for all eternity

Well we can't know if they'll face the fire unless their already dead and God sends us a memo or something saying whether they were saved at the last minute or something or whether they all really did end up not really believing in Christ or repenting :/.

The Westboro Baptist Church are nothing but a gang of heretics, fallen from the grace of God and they will all one day be reunited with their leader in the principality of darkness.
Their statements on homosexuality are not their most offensive, for they reserve their evil lies and insults for the Catholic Church and their disgusting attacks on the Pope and the capital of Christianity, the Vatican.

I went to a Unitarian Universalist Church a couple of times back in the mid 1960's. They have a very interesting theology. Please bring them to the protest.

I would like to point out that even though they call themselves "Baptists" they are not a reflection on the actual Baptist church, or act like any Baptists I have ever met in my entire life. I want to know if I can sue them for calling themselves Baptists, probably not, and even if I could I probably wouldn't since it would give them more press.

We could dress up as Devils, Angels, Bible dudes, and God and run amuck. We could even have the guy dressed up as God lay his head on the guy dressed up as the devil and other such stuff. If that dosn't get them to start strapping on bombs I don't know what will.

Actually the Baptist Church was their first target as they would not recognize them as an affilitated member. The Baptist Church was also a key player in Fred Phelps permanent disbarment. Only the most absolutely ignorant even try and associate the Phelps with the actual Baptist church. The same people that try and associate them with Republicans despite the fact they are outspoken Leftist Democrats.

Westboro Baptist Church is led by a pathological narcissist, Fred Phelps, who uses religion as a pretext to control and harass people.
The one thing a narcissist CANNOT stand is for people to ignore them. The very most effective thing we could do to stop Fred Phelps cold is to utterly and completely ignore him — not attend his protests, not confront him, not give him air time on the radio and TV — simply act as though he is not living.
That would shut him down faster than anything I can think of.

You are right mostly. Actually Fred is no longer calling the shots, it is now his oldest daughter "Mad Maggie" Marjorie Phelps that runs the show now. She takes the term "Piece of work" to a whole new level. Fred is on his last legs nowdays and his date with destiny will soon be realized.

You keep your 500 pounders off our entertainment! They are really a very unifying force for us in the midwest. It is very a very fashionable source of entertainment to sit around and bash the Phelps family! It is a gratifying experience to see Left and Right, Black and White, Gay and Straight with religious and athiests all agreeing that the Phelps family is the definition of evil and should be purged from existence!

Check with the ACLU to see if you can sue them. I'd be very interested in the ACLU's response.

I'm thinking the left wants to disown them as well, seeing as how the left isn't a huge fan of Phelps hateful, theological nonsense either. Populists may be a better descriptor of Phelps and gang.

Yes, he is, and a very active one who even ran for office in the 1960's and was very active on the political scene up until his disbarment around 1980. Believe it or not, the entire family has manipulated democrat programs with the greatest skill imaginable, and successfully sued Washburn University for discrimination when one of the daughters was denied her "right" to become a lawyer. They turned around with another and sucessfully sued the very same university for showing preferential treatment to minorities when denying another daughter her "right" to become a lawyer.
Like the Baptists, the democrats simply have learned to duck and cover when they see them coming. They sue anyone and everyone they can, for whatever reason they can think of, and make a tidy sum off of out of court settlements.
