Cutting up a pineapple

How do I do this?

It's the first pineapple I've bought living on my own (it was on sale) and when I'm at home with my parents, my dad usually takes care of them... I want to chop it up in such a way that I don't injure myself and get maximum pineapple goodness, any advice?

I almost thought about delving into which type of knife you're using or whatever, but then I remembered the only two types of advice I've ever recieved referring to pineapples are as follows:
"Don't eat the spikey part, it'll kinda hurt"
AND
"The hard part in the center is a natural laxative"

So, um.....avoid the outside and the core, and best of luck.....

I know that part... well, nto about the core being a laxative, but I wasn't planning on eating that anyways...

I'm not sure what knife is best for the task, but I have a bunch of them.

I usually just take a large vegetable knife (I should know the correct name of it...the really huge one...I think it's a chef knife) and cut it in half down the side. Then I do the same with each of the halves. Then I cut out the fruit and leave the shell. Not the most efficient manner, but hell, I don't eat whole pineapples that often. I love pineapple, but I rarely get fresh ones and they make my lips feel weird if I eat too much, probably because they're so acidic.

Chop the top of too, and then stand it upright, and with your knife, cut verticle strips of the peel, working your way around (like you're cutting kernels off a cob of corn). once youre done that, you can slice into horizontal circles or cut it in half and make semicircles.

My mom does this thing that involves cutting it in ridges that (I think) preserves slightly more pineapple by accounting for the deeper spines, but I'm not that sophistcated.

They have a lot of protein dissolving enzymes in them. I'm not planning on eating the whole thing today, but I want it hacked to pieces so I can eat it over a couple of days...

i would never cut it that way unless i needed perfect little circles to impress someone

cut off the top and the bottom

cut it into quarters lengthwise.

take one quarter and cut the hard middle out with one long cut.

if you dont like the idea of the spikey outside i suppose you can now cut the juicy part away from the outside.

cut it into chunks

eat them

put the other 3/4 of the pineapple into the fridge. you cant eat more than 1/4 of a pineapple at a time.

dont worry about waste. there is always more pineapple than anyone (or 2) can eat without burning their mouths.

If you don't need pineapple slices, and can go with chunks, then you can do what that link shows, from cutting off the top and bottom, then turn the pineapple up on it's end again and cut it like a pizza, down the middle and the several more times all the way down. Then you can cut off the skin by trimming it AND cut off the center by trimming down the inside of the triangle shape spears. Then you can slice the spears like you would a carrot to get nothing but chunks.

If you want slices, then you have to do it the way the link showed.

Good eats. :)

Yeah, I did cut chunks rather than slices like on the website. it's much easier to do.

But the main thing: I didn't waste a lot of pineapple (most of it's in a container in my fridge now) and I didn't have to go to the emergency room for hacking off a finger.

fresh pineapple is sooo good. This thread makes me want one. I have to go shopping later anyways. Im adding it to the list. Especially since we have a better understanding of how to cut one properly.

Should have gotten one of the guys at the produce department to do it, since they should have access to a special Pineapple Guillotine. I know because I've done the job. it simultaneously cores the pineapple and removes the outer skin, leaving a yellow cylinder that makes your hands sticky for hours.
