McDonalds to close 25 of its branches in the UK

We all have our fantasy headlines - the announcement of events of global or national significance that chime irresistibly with our own personal values and ambitions. "Texas oil reserves found to be unlimited" would probably be George Bush's. Though I suppose it might be trumped by "WMDs found in Iraq - and Iran".

Well, I almost got to see one of mine this week. "McDonald's goes bust!" - that would have been the undiluted, full-fat, maximum-caffeine version. In truth the news isn't quite that spectacular. But it's pretty brilliant all the same: "McDonald's to close 25 stores in the UK".Even McDonald's European boss, Denis Hennequin, is struggling to put a happy face on the situation: "The UK has been in negative territory for a couple of years now," he admitted. "The brand 15 years ago was very trendy and modern. It is now tired."The most devastating news for McDonald's, and the thing they can do least about, is that they are becoming seriously uncool. A survey published last week revealed that Britain's teenagers are turning their backs on the Golden Arches in droves. Just 1% of 13- to 15-year-olds said McDonald's was their favourite meal, down 7% on a year ago.

i share your enthusiasm about mcdogburger closures.
perhaps not everyone is totaly ignorant of or indifferent to what they stuff in their gut after all.

now if we could just stop worshipping the automobile, the circular illogic of little green pieces of paper, and a few other gratuitously conventional absurdities, we might yet be able to stop stabbing ourselves collectively in our own backsides.

small gratifications we must make the best of where we can. long may there be more of them.

Meh. I havent eaten in McDonalds in ages. I'm much more likely to get a sub, or if I do want a burger, I'll go burger king. Grilled is marginally better tasting than fried :D

Anyway. I hope they close one of the two in my town, but they probably wont.

Add a pinch of turmeric to the Dahl and if you are cooking it with a pressure cooker, add a couple of red chillies in the cooker itself with the turmeric.

Sorry no tips for lamb. Never cooked lamb.

I'm sorry, I did not have a Brideshead Revisited upbringing. I had to walk to school through the snow, uphill both ways, under enemy fire, carrying a 20lb toolkit. And when I got there it was all shop courses, none of this grammar stuff for us urban lads.

That's something I've never been able to comprehend about McDs. Their burgers are absolute crap. They're tiny, limp jokes with a miniscule piece of processed 'meat' and some unidentifiable sauce that's probably come (literally) from the gonads of a diseased buffalo. The prices aren't that cheap either. And yet everyone goes there.
Imagine if a little locally-owned takeway bar started offering a similar style hamburger. Everyone would be complaining about the shiteness of their burgers and they'd close within a couple of weeks. Ppl have different (read much lower) standards for McDs over small takeaway bars.
Amazing how much good adveretising can make one overlook quality.

Not that I’m a big fan of the burned, broiled, and boiled local meal alternative, but I think Britain is better off without MacDonald’s. Sure they’re good employers for kids and have excellent scholarship programs, but on the other hand they may as well be serving cardboard to kids, when you think of how healthy that stuff is.

I could handle some MacDonald’s franchises being closed where I live too. I hate to feel left out. The horrible truth is that MacDonald’s food is kinda fun to eat, just so long as you don’t think of it as food and expect to gain any nourishment from it. It should be regarded the same way as eating candy.

Curry it is!

Vegan Curried Rice

"Simple but delicious curried rice that will go well with essentially any meal."

Prep Time: 5 Minutes
Cook Time: 25 Minutes
Ready In: 30 Minutes
Servings: 4 (change)

Ingredients:

* 2 tablespoons olive oil
* 1 tablespoon minced garlic
* black pepper to taste
* 1 tablespoon ground cumin, or to taste
* 1 tablespoon ground curry powder, or to taste
* 1 tablespoon chili powder, or to taste
* 1 cube vegetable bouillon
* 1 cup water
* 1 tablespoon soy sauce
* 1 cup uncooked white rice

Directions:

1. Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over low heat. Sweat the garlic; when the garlic becomes aromatic, slowly stir in pepper, cumin, curry powder and chili powder. When spices begin to fry and become fragrant, stir in the bouillon cube and a little water.

2. Increase heat to high and add the rest of the water and the soy sauce. Just before the mixture comes to a boil, stir in rice. Bring to a rolling boil; reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 15 to 20 minutes, or until all liquid is absorbed.

3. Remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes.

The food isn't quite that bad you know though it is hardly quality food. Eat there enough and it gets quite good especially the fries. People go there however as it is much easier then cooking for yourself, or if you are travelling then you can pull in for some fast food and then you are off again. Convienience you know, over quality.

But that's the point: It's not good. I can get far better hamburgers for about the same price from my local takeaway and it means waiting maybe a couple of minutes more (or the same if I ordered a fillet a fish).

Well, the UK not being a bastion of great tasting food historically (except for two foods Shepards Pie and fish/chips). I kind of feel sorry for them. Not that I'm a fan of McDonalds, on the contrary, I may eat there twice a year at most and that is only because it might be the only place open of last resort. I have to admit that you do get a higher level of customer service at the place and if only people would eat their food in moderation they wouldn't get such a bad rep. Oh and the deforestation in South America for the beef. That sucks.

I don't mind McDonalds. It’s good if you need to just grab something to eat quickly.

I've never understood Subway though; I think it's the food equivalent of Starbucks. It's incredibly expensive, and it's just a sandwich. I can make one of those at home.

Not really. The McDonalds is across from a Sonic, next to an Arbys and a Checkers, and down the street from a Taco Bell. And the private food place in the school University Center serves hotwings and pizza.

Must say I've found McD's in the USA to be better than in the UK. Not sure if that's a universal pattern or just my own bad luck.

Whatever the case, the more McD outlets that close, the better. And while we're at it, can I add Starbucks to my "please close now" request list? Before we in the UK end up with one on every street corner, as seems to be the case in parts of the US.

The Guardian seems to want to portray this as a body blow to global capitalism and corporate muscle - lol. The only reason that McD's is on the decline is because there's a subway just opened across the street that makes better quality food for a cheaper price. If anything, this is a victory for the free market, if a corporation is not producing a product at a high standard then ultimately it will be replaced.

The case is so often made that McDonalds is an oppressive company to which we are enslaved, that we are brainwashed to eat their junk. In reality it is the other way around, for over a decade now, McDonalds has danced, gyrated, contorted and ultimately failed to satisfy our tastes.

I use about a table spoon of tumeric per kilo/two pounds of dry lentils, compared to a couple of spoons of cumin and a teaspoon of chili powder. Then there are the cardomon, garam masala, ginger, garlic, corriander, and pepper. The tumeric would do well indeed to dominate.

Actually I am not sure how much I use, however much looks right at the time.

If you had been using it like that for a long time, then it is better you stick with it...because much of spicy food is acquired taste. I love my cooking, but not many does...because I am so used to cooking for my taste.

So you add pepper and chilli powder? I need to try that sometime.
