I have to say the US flag. It's just so.. meh.

Though it was okay before there were 50 stars. But it's just so bland now IMHO.

I nominate the United States. MAN, our flag sucks. Everyone else's has crazy colors and designs and cool lookin' crests, and ours... It's got some stars and stripes. Whoop-de-freakin'-doo.:confused:

It's a MAPLE leaf I'll have you know. Without maple trees, there would be no maple syrup and without maple syrup pancakes and waffles a impossible to eat. Not only that it's a RED maple leaf. Red being the color of blood and fire, which Washington was covered in when we were done with it.

I would say clearly Malaysia. The thing is a virtual duplicate of the US flag, which isn't so impressive to begin with. Beats the hell out of me why they chose to copy a country they don't even agree with politically.

The old Rwandan flag was pretty bad. Who puts their country's first initial on a flag? It just looks cheap and unoriginal.

In honor of the OP my vote goes to Romania :p. Not that the German color combination is a whole lot better, but Romania is just terrible.

Even as a kid I always pitied the Romanian athletes (and there are quite a few good ones, too, esp. at the summer olympics) because they had to wear those hideous colors. Terrible.

I eat waffles and pancakes all the time without maple syrup.

Lybia has indeed brought on a new level of half-assing it. Still, I like green... but that's not really a flag, is it? It doesn't get my vote for the worst flag. It's too simple for that. It doesn't even get my vote for a flag.

As for worst flag: anything that's too complicated for regular people to duplicate. That includes, but is not limited to, the US, tibet, nepal, etc...

Some complication is nice... but sometimes, you can get too much into details.

Technically the US one is a tricolour itself.
But three bands, and especially three vertical bands, is a symbol that implies a Freemason tradition. I doubt that most countries trace it back to that, but that's the factual origin. Technically, they aren't duplicates of each other (unless you mean the Slavic theme of red-white-blue). They manage to reflect local tradition, even if the final display is arbitrary.

That's a tough one. Libya's is a popular choice but I think it's more boring and uninspiring than hideous. But my personal worst flag has to be that of Nepal, (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9b/Flag_of_Nepal.svg/300px-Flag_of_Nepal.svg.png) I mean what were they thinking? I usually like an original flag, but that's just taking the piss! My favourite is South Africa's, (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/af/Flag_of_South_Africa.svg/800px-Flag_of_South_Africa.svg.png) it's a bold and original design that was pulled off very well. I also quite like Kiribati's (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d3/Flag_of_Kiribati.svg/600px-Flag_of_Kiribati.svg.png) design, it's pretty funny.

But I think some of the best looking flags, while not actually national flags, are some of the Nazi ones. Not the main flag as that was a bit basic, but their battle flags looked really excellent.

Caricom looks like a cheesy corporate flag with the two “C”’s. Gagauzia is a terrible flag: all true blue with tiny stripes of red and white at the bottom. Libya at least is a nice colour, even if it does look like a work in progress. It’s like they couldn’t agree what to put on it so in disgust just went with plain green. Somalia also looks a bit strange, with the one white star in the middle of the blue like that.

On a converse note I nominate the Turkmen flag as the best. Is there any other flag in the world that looks like it has a dual use as a carpet?

The original flags of Islam were solid colors, back with the prophet it was solid black, then the Ummayyads had a solid white. Libya's is pretty much the exact same flag used by Fatimids, who ruled over North Africa.
So they are super unoriginal, coping the most unoriginal flag..

If you want to get into US states, all but a few are terrible.

Besides is that not the point, Canada is not a warmongering country. But don't take that for granted or else we will sick our Canadian Geese at you and trust me you don't want that. Here at UW, we have a few flocks that they call home one decided to nest out side a set of doors no one could use that entrance for the rest of the term! That and they crap everywhere!

It doesn't, atlases include it because they can't stand the idea of having a place sans flag. It was made up by flag designer Graham Bartram, just United Nations blue with an outline of the continent, to keep it neutral.

The British Antarctic Territory has its own flag, though, a sort of White Ensign with a penguin-supported shield.

Worst is the Belarussian, dull design with unnecessary complication and no historical tradition whatsoever other than that of despotism and bloodshed.

Why should a flag scare anybody? What a waste of flag! It's supposed to symbolize something the nationals consider essential about their own country, not serve as some kind of scarecrow.

And for the guy that asked what the US flag is supposed to be, once upon a time we used to be taught in school about the symbolism of our flag. It's worth knowing a thing like that, as long as you remember that a flag's symbolism takes hard work to achieve. A flag can tell you the ideals we're meant to be aspiring to. The US flag's symbolism is one of the things the first "Americans" talked about early on, although over the years some things were added. The early stuff is the best.

Here's what I remember from what we were taught. It's probably not complete recall, but I blame my age!

Other countries came from the shifting of boundaries through war, intrigue or marriages between ruling families, but the USA was a novum. The stars on the blue field were supposed to represent the presence of "a new constellation in the heavens" as somebody said back while we were still fighting the War of Independence, not just the re-assignment of a few stars from one existing constellation to another. The blue of the heavens also stand for qualities like justice and eternal vigilance ("the price of liberty" as the saying tells us). It's also a kind of pointer to foundational principles that are greater than ourselves --- from "God" and "The Ideal". ("We hold these truths to be self-evident: ..." in those days, that would point to their status as axioms, given to us and discovered by us, but not derived from ourselves.)

Stripes were originally going to indicate the number of states, as also the stars, until they realized they could end up with a flag that extended along a whole flag pole. So the stripes came to stand for the original 13 colonies, and the stars were set to the number of present states. The red is supposed to indicate courage, valor, that kind of thing. White is supposed to stand for purity, innocence, virtue.

So there you have it. As originally conceived, the USA was meant to be something new and different. It also was meant to be a nation that would remain vigilant to uphold liberty and divine justice and would not regard itself as the final measure or arbiter of The Good, but would look beyond itself for everlasting truths.

And, the USA was meant to remember its history while also living in and adapting to the present. The USA is supposed to treasure and embody qualities like vigilance, liberty, fair-play, mercy, courage, valor, purity, innocence, and unstained virtue. And because of those qualities the USA is supposed to reject vices like self-centredness and arrogance, laziness, carelessness, cruelty, tyranny, unfairness, cowardice, corruption, compromise or the surrender of principles for political or financial expediency.

There you have it. The flag of the USA is intended as a symbol of our ideals, our aspirations toward the virtues that would make us more than merely a powerful nation, that would make us a nation that could respect itself and be respected by others for virtue and goodness and fairness. We, and the people who lead us, are meant to remember these ideals every time we and they see the flag. And we all are meant to be vigilant, to live up to those ideals and protect them from compromise or corruption or dilution.

Read more of the posts. It's not exactly true: it was the colour of the Fatimids. It usually came as a package deal with black, white, and red.
Even if most asssume that it stands for Islam, it does not. Especially since the Fatimids were Ismeali, which does not rhyme with mainstream Islam.

I'd have to go with the majority here and say the Libyan flag. Great for the Revolution, but, well... it needs a sickle and a hammer or a cresent and a star or something once you've got yourself a nation.
